Teahouse and Mayrina in Baldur's Gate 3: how to save and defeat the Hag

Teahouse and Mayrina in Baldur's Gate 3: how to save and defeat the Hag

    Zorthrus

In Baldur's Gate 3 The teahouse is quest and a location where you can save Mayrina from the evil Hag. You have to find out the truth about Aunt Ethel, go through the crooked door and the Overgrown Tunnel, and also fight the masks and the hag. In this guide, we will tell you whether to agree to a deal with a witch, resurrect the girl's husband and give her the wand.

    Passage of the quest “TeaHouse”

    How to start a task

For the first time you can meet Aunt Ethel (X: 193, Y: 545) in the Emerald Grove, where you can purchase some potions and ingredients for them from her. After talking with her, you will learn that she can help you remove the larva, but to do this you will need to go to her Tea House.

It is advisable to visit it here, but not necessary, since you can take on the quest later.

How to find the Tea House by the River

If you have accepted the quest, then simply move towards the marker. Otherwise, head south from the Extinct Village towards the Sunlit Swamp. Right on the border with the new location you will find Ethel (X: 50, Y: 313) arguing with two men. They will claim that the old woman took their sister Mayrina.

With good Insight, you will realize that Ethel is lying. If you immediately accuse her of lying, she will scold you and then immediately disappear. Talk to the brothers. You can offer them your help in finding Mairina, but they will refuse and go into the swamps alone, where they will die in any case.

Note: Some players note that the brothers can still be saved. When playing as a drow or ranger, you can tell them that hags are very dangerous creatures, so they need to be careful. In this case, one of the brothers will say that it is better to leave the witch to us. As a result, they will return to the village, and will not go into the swamp (untested, may have worked in an earlier version).

You can also threaten the guys, telling them not to touch the old lady - in this case, they will think that you are on the side of the witch and will attack you. Kill them and then talk to Ethel. She will invite you to her tea house again.

Go to the Sunlit Marshes and continue south. Move carefully, as along the way you can come across many spike traps that can cause damage and cause bleeding or even cause gangrene. You will also be able to pass an Investigation check (20). If you complete it successfully, you will see what the swamp actually looks like.

If you did not fight with Jol and Demir, but were unable to persuade them to return home, you will soon discover their corpses (X: 6, Y: 244). Before this, you can talk to the sheep and pass another test to see the real appearance of the swamp and the animals (they will turn into redcaps). However, even if you fail, you will still later realize that you actually ended up in a Fetid Mire.

As for the Tea House by the River, it is located west of the crashed Nautiloid at the following coordinates - X: -43, Y: 270. Save and then enter the building. Inside you will find Aunt Ethel, who is feeding Myrina with pies. If you previously accused her of lying to her brothers, she will demand that you apologize to her. Don't be rude to her if you want to continue the conversation, or attack her straight away. We talked about whether it’s worth giving the witch’s eye in a separate guide.

    Completing the quest “Save Mairina”

How to defeat Karga for the first time

If you did not put pressure on Ethel and only talked about the parasite, then even if you refuse the operation, she will not attack you, but she will still teleport the girl to an unknown place. Leave the house, and then return back - the Hag should also disappear. If this does not happen, then try chatting with her and asking about Mairin. This way you will be able to avoid the first fight with the witch.

If you behaved rudely with Ethel and did not ask her about the larva, but tried to understand what she was going to do with the girl, then the aunt will immediately transform into the Hag and attack you. She will also attack you if you don't wait for her to teleport and start searching her house.

So, if the battle starts, get ready for the fact that she will immediately throw a poisonous bomb at you, causing poisoning, so we advise you to place the characters far from each other in advance so that they do not receive damage all together. If there are red caps nearby, they will also attack you, so we recommend dealing with them before the fight with the Hag begins.

Order your ranged fighters to jump onto the high platform on the right side of the room. This will allow you to attack the boss from a safe distance. When she has about half her health left, she will cast a spell and disappear. So there is actually no need to defeat her in this battle.

How to get to the Overgrown Tunnel

If you have fought and driven off the Hag, you will be able to see that the area behind the fireplace is an illusion. Otherwise, go to the fireplace and make an Investigation check to determine that the object is a fake. However, even if you fail, you will be able to move on.

To do this, you will need to put out the fire in the fireplace by simply interacting with it. Then go through the black veil and you will find yourself in a secret passage. Click on the wooden steps to go down into the Overgrown Tunnel. Move forward until you see the Hag.

A cutscene will play again, in which you will be given one last chance to leave the witch's territory. If you refuse, she will not start a fight with you, but will simply disappear.

How to open the Crooked Door in Baldur's Gate 3

Inspect the location to study the hag's past victims (do not destroy the cursed artifacts, otherwise you will be damaged). Here you can find Lorin and talk to him. If your Magic is sufficiently developed, then you will understand that there is an illusion involved here. You won't be able to help him now, but you can roar at him as a mind flayer to get approval from Shadowheart, Laezel and Astarion.

Note: Return to him after killing the Hag to tell him that the witch is no more. He will tell you his story and then run away. You can also talk to the gnome from whom the petrification has subsided and demand a reward from him.

After talking with the elf, interact with the Crooked Door, which will also turn out to be one of the witch’s victims. Talk to her and ask her to let you through. With high Intelligence and Magic scores, you will realize that the door is actually an illusion, and you will have an answer option: “I can see through you. I can just go in and go in." . Select it, and when the dialogue ends, point the camera behind the door and click on the dark area - in the end you can simply go into the Overgrown Tunnel.

You can also make a Persuasion (10) or Intimidation (10) check to see a vision of the Hag calmly walking through the door. In this case, you will also be able to enter the Overgrown Tunnel without any problems. If none of the options worked for you, then all that remains is to find Whispering mask, which lies right next to the door.

Put the mask on any character right in front of the door and step through it without closing your inventory to immediately remove it and lead the rest of the squad through the passage. If you do not remove the cursed item, then you will need to pass a Wisdom check every turn and if you fail, your hero's mind will be taken over by the Hag, so your companions will have to kill or knock him out. In the second case, you can then remove the mask from the companion so that he comes to his senses, but it is better not to let this happen.

How to save masks in the Overgrown Tunnel

In the tunnel you will face four enemies: the mask of horror, regret, slavery and vengeance. Their minds have been taken over by the Hag, so you will probably want to help them, and there is only one way to do this:

    1. Sneak past the masks without trying to fight them (if you put the Whispering Mask on a character with high Wisdom, you can easily pass by the enemies).
    2. Then engage in battle with the Hag. She will call the masks to her aid. Don't attack them - focus all your attention on the witch.
    3. When the Hag has 10 HP left, she will offer you a deal - great power in exchange for her life. Give it up and finish off the witch.

If you release the witch, the masks will remain hostile to you, so you will have to finish them off. Otherwise, they will stop being angry at you, and you will be able to talk to them, but only the mask of regret will remove the cursed object and talk to you normally. The rest remained just empty shells.

Helping masks will give you inspiration "Tearing off the masks" for a folk hero and 50 experience points. The Mask of Regret will say that there are still many hags in the world, so she will go to Baldur's Gate, and then continue hunting for them. Perhaps you can meet her in the third act during the next incident with the witch (not verified).

If you don’t set yourself the goal of saving everyone and everything, playing the role of an ideal hero, then we still We do not advise you to help masks, especially considering that 3 out of 4 are now ordinary dummies anyway. It's better to let the witch go, taking her power to strengthen your character. Below we have discussed this point in more detail.

Note: If you knock out the masks with non-lethal attacks and leave them lying on the ground, then after the death of the Hag you will not be able to wake them up, and after a long rest in the camp they will simply disappear and will be considered dead.

How to get to the Ancient Monastery

Having dealt with the masks or sneaking past them unnoticed, move towards the waterfall and go through it, jumping to the opposite ledge. Ahead you will find areas with toxic fog that you need to jump over or fly through using a flight potion or the Smooth Fall spell.

Note: There is a vent inside the poisonous clouds, through which the dangerous gas actually enters, so if you throw some heavy object into them (chests will do), you can close them, and the fog will simply disappear.

Let's add that there are traps hidden behind the clouds, so send ahead a character with high Perception who can disarm them. Move down as carefully as possible. Don’t rush to approach the cell in front - first, rest a little to restore your health and spells, and then save, as a battle with the Hag awaits you ahead.

How to defeat Karga a second time

First of all, prepare well for the battle by taking more potions and fully restoring your hit points. We recommend taking Astarion, Gale, Shadowheart/Will for the battle (the last option depends on what class your character is - if he is a priest or a paladin, then take the Frontier Blade).

Give all characters long-range weapons. Then, in stealth mode, try to take them to the ledge at the point X: -422, Y: 574. This will make it easier for you to hit the Hag while reducing the likelihood of you getting hit. Let's add that the Hag's level is 5th, so your heroes must be at least level 4.

    First phase

If Will is on the team, then at the beginning of the battle be sure to summon his demon behind the witch. Then start destroying the Hag’s illusions, hitting them with the weakest attacks, since they fall apart from any poke, so it’s definitely not worth spending powerful skills on them. By the way, the real Ethel always swears when she takes damage, so attach some kind of long-lasting debuff to her so that you can always find the real one.

As for the cage with Myrina, which the witch sets on fire, it is not necessary to extinguish it immediately. You can deal with the first wave of copies first, and then safely approach the cage and throw a water bottle at it or cast Shadowheart's Create Water. You can also simply click on the Control Sphere (yellow ball).

On a higher difficulty level, Ethel may be able to summon copies of herself one more time before the fight moves to the second stage. Be sure to destroy all illusions so that they cannot inflict huge damage on you.

    Second phase

The witch will get Mairin out of the cage, and then turn into her. You will need to decide which one is fake and attack it. You can find the one you need based on two criteria: firstly, the fake one will have only 8 health points, and secondly, only the real one gives her word that she is not Ethel. At least that was the case in our case.

    Third phase

At the final stage, the Hag will again summon copies of herself, but now she herself will become invisible. You can determine its location by the blood trail (if you managed to apply bleeding to it) or by the movement of the camera. She will come out of invisibility herself when you deal with all the clones. Now all you have to do is finish off the old lady.

Note: If you are on the side of the Hag's offer of power, then you can kill her almost instantly. To do this, after the battle begins, stand behind the witch, and then simply push her into the abyss, as shown in the picture below. To do this, select a character with well-pumped Athletics.

Kill the Hag or settle for force

If you did not push the witch off the cliff, then when she has about 5-10 HP left, a dialogue may begin with her in which she will offer you incredible power in exchange for her life and Mairin. Here you can make the following decision:

    • Nothing good will come of this. Let Mairina go - the witch will be able to escape, but you will save the young lady.
    • Keep the girl for yourself. I will take away the power - the witch will give you Aunt Ethel’s Hair, which, when eaten, allows you to increase any hero’s characteristic by +1. At the same time, the hag will run away with Mairina, so the task will be considered failed.
    • Then I choose a dead hag - the battle with her will continue, and you can finish off the enemy.
    • Now help will come to me... - you will need to pass a Deception check (20) to take both the power and Mairin. If you fail, you will lose both rewards. Ethel will be very angry with you and will promise to remember this for you.
    • I'll take everything. In exchange for your life, you will need to pass an Intimidation check (20) to take both the power and Mairin. If you fail, you will lose both rewards. Ethel will be very angry with you and will promise to remember this for you.

If you decide to finish off the Hag, you can then take from her corpse more than 1 thousand gold coins, potions, poisons, scrolls, the “Corellon’s Grace” staff (uncommon) and the Darkened Talisman (makes checking against Instant Death easier).

Important: We advise you to choose the option in which you release the Hag, but at the same time take away her power and leave the girl with you. The thing is, even if you kill the witch, she will still be reborn, and you will encounter her again in Act 3. More on this below.

Should Mayrina's husband be resurrected and the staff given to her?

If you killed the Hag, we advise you to use “Conversation with the Dead” on her to find out that she planned to eat Mairina’s child. Only after this, talk to the girl. She will be extremely dissatisfied with your actions, as she wanted to make a deal with the witch - to give her baby for training in exchange for the resurrection of her husband.

If you can convince her that Ethel was going to eat her child, then Myrina will finally thank you and give you her medallion. Now go into the pungent-smelling workshop by opening the wooden door ahead. Here you can find the Witches' Staff, the All-Seeing Eye amulet and Rod Bitter parting (if the girl is alive).

Note: You can return back to the Hag's victims to chat with them (if you killed Ethel). If the dwarf is still petrified, use Basilisk Oil on him. However, if the Hag is alive, he will die immediately, so you can just take his things.

Enter the portal in the workshop to find yourself in the swamps near Mairina (X: -68, Y: 230), crying near the coffin with her deceased husband. Talk to her and tell her about the rod you found. Next, you will have several options to choose from:

    • Aim the wand towards the coffin - in this case you will actually resurrect Connor, albeit in the form of an ordinary zombie. Then you can give her the rod, and then she will go to Baldur's Gate to find a cure for her husband. If you kill her husband or don't give her the wand, she will become hostile towards you and you will have to deal with her.
    • Break the rod in half - Mayrina will run away or become hostile towards you, which is why you will have to deal with her.
    • You can keep the rod for yourself without telling Maireena about it. In this case, you will be able to summon a dead man who will support you in battle.

Whatever your decision, the quest “Save Mairina” will come to an end. However, the story with the girl and Karga will not end there. You can continue it when you reach Baldur's Gate in the third chapter. The start of the mission will be slightly different depending on the decisions you make.
