    The Chinese government is introducing restrictions on donations and gachas for games like Genshin Impact

    As you know, game development in China has many restrictions and rules: the government obliges companies to strictly regulate their content and verify the personal data of users, and underage gamers are forced to meet a time limit. Now donat and gacha, which are an integral part of many online games, are under attack, including popular projects from the HoYoverse studio - Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. The new rules could have a huge impact on the market, and companies are already reporting falling share prices and eroding confidence among large investors.

    The restrictions imposed on the Chinese gaming segment have a simple goal - to control user spending. It is no secret that gamers from the Middle Kingdom willingly invest large amounts of money in “shareware” online games. Now users on Chinese servers will have to face the following changes :

    • Limit on the donation amount for each user (conditions and terms are not yet known);
    • A ban on daily rewards that encourage people to return to the game (these include daily rewards in the BP and the Moon reward);
    • A complete ban on any mechanics related to the likelihood of receiving a reward (simply, gacha and loot boxes);

    With the introduction of new rules, any finished game project in China must undergo 2-month regulatory review, based on the results of which it will be decided whether the game will be released or not. The decree will also affect streamers who will no longer be able to accept donations in large amounts.

    It is assumed that the changes will not affect foreign players in any way. In the future, we'll find out how the developers of our favorite games plan to handle the situation, and what will happen to Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail and similar online projects.
