IN Silent Hill 2 Remake Many players are interested in the question of how to increase FPS and remove lags (freezes) in the game. The fact is that this horror turned out to be poorly optimized, so it often slows down even on computers that meet the recommended system requirements. In this guide, we will tell you what graphics settings to choose, and what else can be done to get rid of crashes and freezes in the sequel.
Silent Hill 2 Remake System Requirements
First of all, we advise you to familiarize yourself with the minimum and recommended system requirements of the game. However, we will immediately note that the developers have played it safe and slightly increased them, so you can try to run it on a weaker computer. Below we will indicate on which one.
Minimum system requirements
- OS: Windows 10 or 11
- CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600
- RAM: 16 gigabytes
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 5700 with 8 GB of video memory
- DirectX: Version 12
- Winchester: 50 gigabytes of free space
The game's Steam page states that such a configuration is required to run the game in Full HD resolution and 30 FPS on low/medium graphics settings. However, in reality, you will need a less powerful "machine". When choosing minimum graphics settings, you can easily use a processor of the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 level, and a video card GeForce GTX 1060 with 3 gigabytes of memory. However, sometimes the performance can drop to 25 frames per second and below.
Recommended System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10 or 11
- CPU: Intel Core i5-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
- RAM: 16 gigabytes
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 or AMD Radeon RX 6800
- DirectX: Version 12
- Winchester: 50 gigabytes of free space
Such a PC, according to the developers, will be able to deliver 30 or 60 frames per second at high or medium graphics settings, respectively, at a Full HD resolution. To run the game in 4K resolution, you will need to activate DLSS technology or its alternatives. For a resolution of 1440p and enabling ray tracing, you will need a GPU no lower than RTX 4070.
Silent Hill 2 Remake Optimal Graphics Settings
Before you start digging into configuration files, unlocking frame generation, or changing launch parameters, we recommend that you change the graphics settings. Below, we will look at the most important parameters separately and tell you how much they affect overall performance, and what value you should choose for them. Note that the data was selected for the PC from the Recommended System Requirements.
- Screen mode – select “Full screen”. By default, you may have “Windowed” selected.
- Resolution – should match your monitor resolution for better immersion.
- Ray Tracing – Select “Off” as this option currently significantly reduces FPS. Although the picture with ray tracing becomes more realistic (see the video below).
- Frame rate limit – select “No limit”.
- VSync – Select “Off” as there may be a performance penalty when enabled.
- Panini Projection – Select Off. This should only be enabled by those with ultra-wide monitors.
- AI Anti-Aliasing Technology – Select FSR 3.0 (if using a Radeon graphics card), DLSS (if using a NVIDIA graphics card), or XeSS (if using an Intel graphics card).
- Settings - select "Quality" if you have a powerful enough video card, or "Performance" if you have a weak GPU.
- Blur – Select Off for a clearer picture.
As for "Additional quality settings" , then you can set most parameters to "Medium" or "High" values, as they have little effect on FPS. You can specify "Low" only if you play on a very weak computer.
There are also a few options in this section that can still significantly impact the game's performance, namely:
- SSR – select “Off”, as this will increase FPS by 10-15%, although the picture will become slightly worse.
- Shadow Quality – Select “Low”, which will increase performance by up to 35%, while the picture will not change much.
- Shader Quality – select “Low”, thereby increasing performance by 5-7%, while the picture will not change much.
How to Increase FPS in Silent Hill 2 Remake
If you are sure that your PC should be able to handle the game without problems at certain graphics settings, but you still experience lags, freezes and slowdowns, then we advise you to use the methods listed below.
Run Silent Hill 2 Remake in DirectX 11 mode
Although the game requires DirectX 12, it can be launched in the previous version mode. To do this, you will need to do the following:
- Open Steam, go to Library and right click on Silent Hill 2.
- Then click on the Properties option to open the corresponding menu.
- In the "General" section, find the "Launch Options" column and write there "-dx11" without quotes.
Note that if you are not using the Steam version, create a shortcut for the SHProto.exe file in the game folder, then right-click on it, select "Properties" and in the "Shortcut" section find the "Object" column. In it, you need to enter the word –d3d11 , as shown in the picture below.
Many players have noted that this method significantly improves performance in the Silent Hill 2 remake.
Activate frame generation
The game itself does not support frame generation, but the Unreal Engine 5 has a similar function, at least for FSR. By activating this option, you can significantly increase FPS. However, artifacts or blurring may occur in the game.
So, to activate this option, you need to do certain things. Open the folder where the game configuration file is stored. Usually, you can find it in the following directory: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\SilentHill2\Saved\Config\Windows
Next, open the Engine.ini file using Notepad or Notepad++. Then copy the text below to the very end of the file and be sure to save it.
- [SystemSettings]
- r.FidelityFX.FI.Enabled=1
Launch the game and be sure to select FSR 3.0 in the graphics settings in the column "AI anti-aliasing technology", otherwise frame generation simply will not work.
Set high priority
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and then go to the Details tab and find in the list SHproto-Win64-Shipping.exe . Right-click on it, hover over "Set Priority" and select "High". You'll need to do this every time you launch the game. Some players have seen a 5-10 FPS increase in frame rate.
Let's add that you should definitely update the drivers for your video card: NVIDIA or Radeon. We also recommend downloading the latest or required versions Microsoft DirectX, .Net Frameworks And Visual C++.
