Protector of the Forge Grym in Baldur's Gate 3: how to win

    Zorthrus

In Baldur's Gate 3 Protector of the Forge Grym is a dangerous boss that can be encountered in Grimforge when activated Adamantine Forge. This enemy is normally immune to any type of damage, and to inflict significant damage on him, you need to use a special battle tactic. For this reason, we decided to talk about the most effective ways to defeat this enemy.

How to defeat Protector of the Forge Grym in Baldur's Gate 3

Recommended character level: not lower than the fourth.

You will encounter this automaton when you insert the mithril ore and casting mold into the forge, and then turn the Lava Valve. The main difficulty of the battle with him is related to the fact that without the "Melting" status, he is invulnerable to all types of damage. As soon as he steps on the lava, he gains the desired debuff (lasts 2 turns), becoming susceptible to the following types of damage:

    • Cutting - stability.
    • Stab - stability.
    • Crushing - vulnerability.
    • Thunder - stability.
    • Cold is stability.
    • Strength is resilience.

Given this information, we strongly recommend that all warriors be equipped with blunt weapons, and mages stock up on thunder, cold and power spells. However, even with the right spells, wizards will not be very useful in this battle.

It should also be remembered that with each strike, the guard changes the priority of the threat, that is, on his next turn, he goes to kill that the character who attacked him last. This can and even should be used in all the methods of killing the boss described below.

    First way (canonical)

Let's start with the simplest method, which was provided by the developers as the main one. It is based on using the hammer of the forge to deal massive damage to the enemy. To do this, you will need to dip it in lava, lure it to the crucible, and then press the forge lever.

    Примерное расположение персонажей перед боем
Approximate position of characters before the battle

The first step is to correctly place the team before the start of the battle. Divide your squad and choose a character with Misty Step and the ability to deal damage from afar. Jump them on the crucible. Place the second hero, who has the least combat potential, next to the lava valve, and the third and fourth on the western platform.

Note: The third or fourth hero can immediately be placed near the forge lever, so as not to force the second to constantly run back and forth.

Select the second fighter and turn the valve to summon the Eternal Protector - he will immediately fall into the lava, so he will become vulnerable to the above types of damage. Switch to the hero who climbed onto the crucible and attack the guard with it. Go back to the second hero and lead him to the forge lever (this is not necessary if you already have someone standing next to the handle).

The rest of the team must skip a turn. In this case, the boss will choose the hero in the center of the arena as a priority target, so he will go towards him. When he gets close to the crucible, you will need to move your character away from Grim - this is exactly where Miststep will help you - we advise you to send him to the western circular area, where magma mephits will soon appear in order to quickly finish them off.

Now select a hero standing near the forge lever and interact with him to make the hammer fall on the automaton, destroying 140 health points from him. Next, deal with a group of magma mephits that will fly in from the west (for this you will need two squad members located there).

The boss can recover quite quickly after being hit, so you will need to quickly return to the crucible and lure Grim to him again. Do not forget that the character who stands in the center of the arena should hit him last. Plus, the enemy must have the Melt effect, otherwise he will not take damage even if you hit him with a forge hammer, so do not forget to turn the valve.

When Grim has 20-40 HP left, you can try to finish him off by yourself without using the hammer.

    The second way (frontal attack)

If you want to defeat the boss in a direct encounter without using a forge hammer, then you will first need to properly prepare for the battle by taking the necessary equipment and spells, as well as drinking elixirs. Next, choose one or two characters who will play the role of tanks / damage dealers. They should be as alive as possible and be able to use blunt weapons. You can cast Mirror Reflection on them.

The rest of the heroes will perform the support function, that is, strengthen / heal the tank and deal additional damage to Grim, for example, with the help of Raven familiars that can inflict Blindness on the enemy, further increasing the survivability of the main damage dealer. One of them should be kept near the lava valve to regularly release lava and keep the automaton in a vulnerable state.

Your main task here will be to keep the defender in one place. We are talking about his original position after the start of the battle. To do this, place the tank on the edge of the east path, where there is no lava, as shown in the picture below. He should always attack the boss last, so that he constantly aggro on him and does not go anywhere.

With the proper leveling of your characters, as well as the presence of protective and healing spells, you should last long enough to defeat the boss.
