In Honkai: Star Rail, proper team building directly affects your success in battles. You can’t just throw legendary characters into the squad and expect them to win in all battles. For this reason, we decided to make a guide to creating powerful builds and unit builds, which will help you prepare the best groups for certain tasks.
We will also show many examples of the best teams, pointing out their main advantages and features. Plus, you'll learn which unit to use early on in the game so you can get through the opening story and side quests with ease.
Basic tips for building a team in Honkai: Star Rail
All heroes have a certain element, Path and abilities that combine in different ways with each other. For this reason, care must be taken to ensure that the characters can complement each other, enhancing their strengths and eliminating weaknesses.
At the same time, even if you manage to assemble a squad with perfect synergy, you can still lose to some boss if you do not take into account his vulnerabilities. In this case, you simply cannot destroy his shield.
Among other things, since the game basically does not have a timer or turn time limits, you should focus not on dealing maximum damage, but on restoring and surviving your team. Remember that even the most massive DPS will be useless if the enemy kills your DPS in two or three turns.
In summary, there are four main factors to consider when building a good battle group:
- Survival - be sure to take a good healer or protector (you can take both). Many opponents hit accurately and hard, and since we are talking about turn-based battles, they will perform their attacks on you anyway. Therefore, if you cannot restore the health of the characters or prevent damage to them, then their death will only be a matter of time.
- Synergy - some heroes simply don't fit together or do it badly, so you can't thoughtlessly take them into your pack. For example, in Clara, the main damage comes from counters, for the activation of which it is necessary that she be hit. If you combine her with March 7 and use the Power of Pretty shield on her, she will have a high chance of being attacked by opponents next turn.
- Skill Points - To use abilities, you need certain points that are generated when using normal attacks. For this reason, you need to form a balanced squad that includes characters that use their skills only in certain situations so that your main damage dealers can activate skills every turn.
- Elements - they play an important role in the combat system of the game. Although you can ignore them and use only one squad in the initial story missions, later on, when you get access to other activities, such as the Forgotten Hall or the Virtual Universe, you will have to pay more attention to it. For example, you will have to build a squad based on the weaknesses of a particular boss.
- Paths are a kind of classes on which the character's role in the team depends. It is recommended to take heroes of different paths to the group in order to make it as balanced as possible.
Character elements
The elements in Honkai: Star Rail are very similar to the elements in Genshin Impact. Each character in the new HoYoverse project belongs to a certain element, and all their attacks (normal hits, skill and ult) deal the corresponding elemental damage. At this point in time, there are 7 different elements in the game, namely:
- Physical
- Fiery
- Ice
- Electric
- Wind
- Quantum
- Imaginary
Why is this division even necessary? The fact is that during your adventures you will encounter a large number of different opponents. Each of them has vulnerabilities (icons of the elements that hang above the health and shield bars), which can be used by applying the corresponding elemental attacks.
Strike with the same element as the opponent's vulnerability to deplete their shield. When the white bar reaches zero, Vulnerability Break will trigger, causing the enemy to take more damage and slow down the speed bar. In addition, it can get certain negative effects.
Thus, if you have a fight with a strong boss, then first you should study his vulnerabilities in order to take heroes of certain elements into the team. We will tell you more about elements and vulnerabilities in a separate guide.
Character Paths
We have already noted above that we are talking about peculiar classes of heroes that determine their role in the squad. At this point in time, there are 7 different paths in Honkai: Star Rail, namely:
- Destruction - this includes heroes with excellent frontal attack. They can deal good damage even without the support of allies and have high survivability.
- Hunting - This includes heroes that deal incredible damage to single targets, so they are great for taking down elite enemies or bosses.
- Erudite - This includes heroes that deal high damage in an area, so they are great for quickly killing large enemy groups consisting of relatively weak opponents.
- Harmony - this includes heroes that can buff allies by increasing the damage dealt by the main damage dealers.
- Non-existence - this includes heroes that can weaken opponents, reducing their attacking and defensive capabilities.
- Preservation - this includes heroes who have excellent defensive abilities, so they can protect their allies from enemy attacks.
- Abundance - this includes heroes who can heal not only themselves, but also their comrades.
For story and some side quests, as well as starting activities, you can assemble a versatile squad that can survive most encounters with monsters. It must include characters from the following Paths:
- Conservation or Abundance. We have already noted above that without a good healer (more preferable in the initial stages) or a defender, your team will simply be destroyed by the enemies. Even if she survives the fight, then you will have to heal and resurrect the heroes later, which is a rather dreary task, especially if you have to do this after each fight.
- Erudition. In most battles, you will have to fight several opponents at once, many of which are ordinary mobs. Thanks to their area of effect attacks, you can take them out quickly and save yourself the hassle.
- Destruction or Hunt. The former are more living, while the latter deal more damage to single targets. Choose according to your current needs. For example, if you need to deal with a thick-skinned boss, then it is better to take a “hunter” that can deal a lot of damage to him in a few hits.
- Harmony or Non-existence. Pick up a support that can buff your allies or weaken your enemies. Again, the choice is yours.
At the same time, we note that at the initial levels there will not be very many benefits from buffers and debuffers, so we advise you to take another character from Erudite, Destruction or Hunt instead (you should choose based on current needs).
Top teams in Honkai: Star Rail
Teams will be sorted by character and element to make it easier for you to pick a squad for your favorite hero or specific opponent. All fighters are divided into four roles:
- Main DPS (Main-DD) - Deals the main damage to enemies. This usually includes characters from the Hunt, Destruction, and Erudite paths.
- Secondary DPS (Sub-DD) - can, if necessary, replace the main damage dealer or cause additional damage to ordinary mobs. This usually includes characters from the Hunt, Destruction, and Erudite paths.
- Support (Support) - strengthen allies or weaken enemies. This usually includes characters from the Harmony and Oblivion paths.
- Healers (Healers) - heal themselves and allies. This usually includes characters from the path of Abundance.
- Defenders (Tanks) - can cast shields and provoke enemies. This usually includes characters from the save path.
We also conditionally distributed the teams by ranks:
- SS is a very strong squad in which the heroes are perfectly combined with each other. It is often a versatile unit, suitable for most tasks.
- S is a strong squad with the right characters. Perfectly performs highly specialized tasks, for example, the destruction of the boss with certain vulnerabilities. At the same time, it can also be considered a universal pack.
- A is a good unit, which may not be very effective in some situations, but at the same time excels in performing specific tasks, for example, in battles with monsters with certain weaknesses.
- B is a medium squad that performs satisfactorily in battles with enemies. It is advisable to quickly change it to something more effective.
Note: This information is based on information received as part of the closed beta test, and therefore may not be relevant after the release of the final version of the game. We will update this information if necessary.
Squads for beginners
As part of the Prologue, you won't have to worry about building a team, as the number of characters you have will be severely limited. Only after unlocking the Jumps and completing the first 20 spins will you be able to more or less form a group on your own.
Keep in mind that you will need to complete up to 50 newbie banner jumps to earn one of the seven available 5-star heroes. It is possible that you will be lucky and the legendary character will drop already on the 20th spin, but we still advise you to be ready for a longer gacha.
In addition, the first half of the planet you arrive on after the prologue (Yarlo VI) is mostly filled with enemies with wind and/or physical damage in their vulnerabilities, so Pathfinder and Dan Heng should be enough to take out any enemies.
Unfortunately, you will have to progress quite a lot in the story on Yarilo VI before you can get the free healer Natasha. For this reason, March 7 will protect your team for the first time. The table below shows a few teams that will be effective at the initial stage of the game.
