In Genshin Impact The All-Devouring Narwhal is a whale of the Abyss and weekly boss, added to the game With You the release of update 4.2 and available as part of the “Shadow of Another World” punishment dungeon. It drops Dark Silk Thread, Dark Whirlwind Eye, and Dark Mass, which are needed to ascend certain characters.

In this guide, we'll show you how to find and defeat this legendary sea monster, going over all of its attacks and moves in detail, as well as recommending commands and the best tactics for fighting it.

Where to find the Devouring Narwhal in Genshin Impact

To gain access to the battle with this boss, you will first need to unlock a special dungeon by completing the Archon quest called "Masquerade of the Guilty". After this, you will be able to challenge this Void Whale at any time, but you will only be able to collect rewards for defeating it once a week. Let us add that in the quest this enemy is somewhat weaker than in the weekly battles.

Note: Starting with patch 4.2, you no longer need to complete story conditions to unlock weekly bosses - you just need to reach Adventure Rank 40. You can start battles with them through the adventurer's guide.

The dungeon passage is located southeast of the Cour de Fontaine, underwater, in the Salos sea plateau. To have the game mark its location for you, simply select "Shadow of Another World" under the "Dungeons of Punishment" section of the Adventurer's Handbook. Once you enter it, you will need to choose the difficulty of the battle depending on the strength of your characters.

Before the battle, be sure to make sure that you have 60 units of Primordial Resin (or 30 if we are talking about one of the first three battles with weekly bosses in the current week), otherwise you will not be able to receive the reward later.

    Characteristics of the Devouring Narwhal

Essentially, you'll have to fight two bosses instead of one: the Devouring Narwhal itself and the Shadow inside the first. Both opponents have different parameters and features, so we will look at each of them separately.

    All-Devouring Narwhal (whale)

Even in its base form, this whale has 70% resistance to Hydro damage, so we do not advise you to take damage dealers of the corresponding element into your team. As for other elements and physical damage, his resistance to them is only 10%, which makes it easier to create an optimal squad.

If we talk about the main attributes, then Narwhal can boast of quite high indicators, for example, his life scale at level 90 is 1.48 million units, and his attack power is 19 thousand points, which is noticeably higher than that of other bosses. Plus, he can perform some extremely powerful area-of-effect attacks.

Thus, he certainly cannot be called a weak opponent. The full stats for this enemy can be seen in the pictures above (2P, 3P and 4P show the stats when playing in co-op mode).

    Shadow

This dark knight has 70% resistance to Electro damage, so we do not advise you to take damage dealers of the corresponding element into your team. As for other elements and physical damage, his resistance to them is only 10%.

If we talk about the main attributes, then the Shadow will be a little weaker than the whale, for example, its life scale at level 90 is 890 thousand units, and its attack power is 10.6 thousand points, so it will be a little easier to defeat it. However, you should still not consider him a weak opponent, since he can cause considerable damage with his area attacks.

    Tips for choosing heroes

Considering the high resistance of bosses to Hydro and Electro elements, it’s definitely not worth taking the main damage dealers of the corresponding element, but you can easily add Hydro (Electro) healers or shield fighters who do not deal direct damage to the enemy. You can even take a sub-DD of these elements to assign appropriate statuses and trigger elemental reactions.

If possible, we recommend adding at least one hero from Fontaine with arche energy (Pneuma or Usia) so that you can quickly destroy the Eye of the Vortex and Phantom Ball when fighting the Narwhal and the Shadow, respectively.

We strongly recommend taking damage-dealing archers into your squad, as the boss will often rise high into the air, becoming inaccessible to those with melee weapons, or hide in another space and come out from above - only archers will be able to reach him there.

You should also take a good healer and/or shielder, as the boss can deal a lot of damage with his attacks, and it will be difficult to dodge them due to the fact that they hit the area. Therefore, you will need to either protect yourself from them, or then restore the health of your squad.

    Devouring Narwhal's attacks and movements

    Whale

    Bounce

The boss jumps out of the water and falls on the player, dealing Hydro damage in an area. In this case, cracks form on the crystal surface, which soon turn into splashes, causing half the damage over the area.

After falling, the whale can continue to swim forward and only then dive back under the water, causing Hydro damage to the area again and forming additional cracks with their subsequent explosion.

    Boer

The crystal surface under the character's feet becomes covered with cracks, and then a narwhal emerges from the water, causing Hydro damage in an area. Splashes occur, which cause additional fall damage.

    Dive

The whale emerges from the portal and dives into the sea, dealing AoE damage to Hydro. Splashes occur, which cause additional fall damage.

    Crystal rain

The boss causes a rain of crystal projectiles to cover almost the entire arena and cause Hydro damage.

    Astral Shower

Blue beams begin to shoot from the sky, causing Hydro damage when they hit. They are quite easy to spot, so you can quickly dodge the attack.

    Eye of the Vortex

A purple sphere appears in the center of the arena, which slowly attracts the character to itself, and then explodes, causing Hydro damage in an area. It can be destroyed by performing 8 normal attacks. If you hit her with an ousia or a pneumatic weapon, she will immediately disappear.

    Absorption

At the beginning of the battle, the whale has a Hostility bar. For the first 80 seconds it will fill at 1 unit per second. Then its filling rate will increase to 2 units per second. Taking damage and destroying the eye of the vortex also causes this bar to fill.

When the narwhal reaches 120 hostility, it will devour the character, transporting him to another dimension where he will have to fight the Shadow. After defeating her, the whale will lose 20% of its health and will be stunned for a few seconds. All your heroes will have their energy restored.

    Shadow

    Sword Swings

The boss can perform 4 different attacks with his great sword. At the same time, he can change the sequence of his attacks or combine them with each other:

    • Swings clockwise, dealing Electro damage in an area and leaving behind a crack in space that explodes after a while.
    • Swings counterclockwise, causing Electro damage in an area and leaving behind a crack in space that explodes after a while.
    • Performs a downwards cleave that deals Electro damage in an area. After this, he immediately makes a second swing from bottom to top.
    • Throws a spinning sword forward, dealing Electro damage to all targets in front of it.

    Phantom Sphere

The boss begins to charge, creating a purple orb. If you attack him with Ushii or Pneuma energy, the charging will be interrupted and the enemy will lose 25% of his maximum health. If he is able to continue the attack, the following action will be performed:

    • The Shadow will summon two geovishaps, which will begin to jump on the player one by one, dealing damage to Pyro in an area.
    • The Shadow will summon four monsters in the corners of the arena, which will roll towards the player, causing Electro damage.
    • Shadow will summon four jellyfish in the corners of the arena, which will begin to release bubbles at the player, causing Hydro damage.

As soon as the summoned creatures complete their attack, the Shadow will appear again, which will then swing its two-handed sword, dealing Electro damage.

How to defeat the Devouring Narwhal

    Preparing for battle

Before the battle starts you can eat the dishes, which increase attack power, critical damage and critical hit chance. It would be a good idea to drink potions that increase certain elemental damage to strengthen your damage dealers. In this case, the following will be useful:

    • Forest Essential Oil – increases Dendro damage by 25% for 5 minutes.
    • Frosting Essential Oil – Increases Cryo damage by 25% for 5 minutes.
    • Gushing Essential Oil – increases Anemo damage by 25% for 5 minutes.
    • Flaming Essential Oil – Increases Pyro damage by 25% for 5 minutes.
    • Unmoving Essential Oil – increases Geo damage by 25% for 5 minutes.

The boss also primarily deals Hydro and Electro damage, so we recommend you take a Desiccant Potion and Insulation, which increases resistance to Water and Electric damage by 25% respectively for 300 seconds.

    Battle strategy

    First phase

In it you have to fight a giant whale. During his first attacks, you are unlikely to be able to deal much damage to him, since he only stays near the ground for a few seconds. You can only “scratch” him a little if you have damage-dealing archers in your squad.

Wait until the boss performs a “drill” attack, that is, he comes out from below, showing first his head and then his whole body - at this moment you can hit him several times in close combat. However, at this stage you don’t have to hit him at all, but simply dodge the blows and wait for the hostility to increase (the red scale next to the health bar).

This gauge increases on its own, but you can speed it up by hitting the boss and destroying the eye of the vortex (purple orb). When it is completely full, the whale will swallow you and the next stage of the battle will begin.

    Second phase

Here you have to fight the Shadow, which is an Abyss Knight that deals Electro damage. Dodge his blows and counterattack. At a certain point, he will enter charging mode, forming a large purple sphere - you will need to hit it with pneuma or ushi energy to stop charging and deal significant damage to the enemy.

If you don't have heroes with pneumusia, you'll have to dodge the Shadow's additional attacks. Her health bar, by the way, is located under the narwhal’s life bar and is colored white. Once it drops to zero, you will return to the main arena, where the whale will lose 20% of its health and fall to the ground. At the same time, your heroes’ energy will be fully restored (so, by the way, you don’t have to save your ultimates when fighting knights).

Immediately activate all the elemental explosions and hit the whale with everything you have to inflict maximum damage on it. If you are lucky, you will be able to kill him at this stage.

    Third and fourth phases

If the whale cannot be killed in one fall, the enemy will take off again. Keep hitting him until he swallows you again. Inside you will have to fight the Shadow again. Then the narwhal will fall again, and you will finally be able to finish him off.

    Achievements for the Devouring Narwhal

During the battle with this boss you can get one trophy. Next we will tell you what you need to do to open it.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Start a boss fight and fill his hostility meter to get into the whale's stomach. There you will deal with the Shadow to get out. When the whale falls to the ground paralyzed, under no circumstances kill him. Let it fly and then wait until it swallows you again.

As soon as you find yourself in another dimension with a shadow, you will immediately be given a new achievement from the “Wonders of the World” category. For opening it you can get 10 primogems.

Rewards for defeating the Devouring Narwhal
