In Baldur's Gate 3 Saving Wanru is side quest the third act, during which you can complete the small task “Help the Survivors” and kill the evil Hag. As a reward, you will receive the legendary rapier Duelist's Prerogative and many other valuable things. In this guide, we will tell you how to complete these missions and still save Captain Grizzly and all the other poor souls who were deceived by the witch.
Walkthrough of the quest “Save Vanru” in Baldur's Gate 3
Consequences of previously made decisions
Note that you most likely already met Aunt Ethel in the first chapter, where she tried to take the child from Myrina. In this quest you could have acted in a variety of ways, which would ultimately affect some of the dialogues and moments in the upcoming task. Below we look at all the possible options:
- If you receive the power of the Hag and save Mairina (you revived her husband and gave her the rod), you will meet the girl along with her zombie husband in Baldur's Gate. She will help you get rid of Ethel once and for all.
- If she receives the power of the Hag and leaves Mairina to her fate, the girl will still be able to escape from the witch. Of course, her attitude towards you will be less positive, but she will agree to help you get rid of the monster.
- If the Hag dies in the first act, she will be able to revive, so you will still have to deal with her. If Mairina is still alive, then you can find her, and she will help you defeat the witch.
- If Mairina died, then you will have to figure out on your own how to defeat Karga and save Vanra. Plus, you won't receive a reward from her after completing this whole story.
However, no matter what you do in Act I, you will be able to take on this task in any case. You may not be able to do this unless you go to the Tea House and completely skip the quest with the witch.
Talk to Laura
Travel to the Basilisk Gate rune circle located in the Lower City, then go up the stairs to the north, turn right and enter the Barracks. Inside you will find Laura arguing with the guards.
Chat with the girl. You will learn that her little daughter Vanra has disappeared. Say that you will help find her, which will lead to the beginning of the task. She will tell you that the last time she saw her daughter was in The Confused Mermaid.
Note: Note that this quest can be accessed in another way, through the Survivors. To do this, you need to look at the poster in the city and go to Barren's chicken coop. However, it seems to us that the above sequence looks more logical. In addition, below we will still tell you how to find these poor fellows and help them.
Head to the Confused Mermaid and check it out
After talking with Laura, head to the tavern (X: -144, Y: -103), located in the same Lower Town, in its central part. Once inside, go up the stairs to the top floor. Turn right and find Captain Grizzly in the room - talk to the girl.
You will learn from her that Laura drank a lot in the tavern, and then attacked an employee of the establishment with a knife, but supposedly there was no girl with her. You will also receive a rather suspicious offer from the captain - she will give you 3 thousand gold coins if you agree to kill Laura. You can agree and really deal with Laura and continue the task, saving Wanra, but this definitely cannot be called a happy ending for her, since she will become an orphan.
Therefore, if you do not want to ruin the girl’s life, then tell Grizzly that this is real madness or categorically refuse to do her dirty work for her. After this, the girl will turn into a Hag and say that you cannot kill her, otherwise the girl inside her will also die. She will then disappear, leaving behind the redcap. Deal with them.
Help the Survivors: Go to Old Garlow's house
Near the Basilisk Gate, you may have come across a poster hanging on the notice board, which states that all victims of the Hag are meeting at Barren's chicken coop (X: 46, Y: -113). Move to the location shown on the map below and then hack or kick down the door. Inside, study a couple of notes that will talk about a new place where the survivors have moved.
We're talking about Old Garlow's house (X: -46, Y: -144). By the way, you can go there right away, skipping the trip to the chicken coop. The door here will also be closed, so you will have to break it or simply knock it out. Inside you will find a group of distrustful people. If you don't want to pick a fight with them, make a Persuasion or Intimidation check (15). If successful, you will learn from Adriella that Myrina is upstairs, but she is not in the best state to talk right now.
How to turn Myrina from a sheep into a human
Climb the stairs to the top floor of the building and look for a sheep there. Use an animal communication potion or spell "Conversation with Animals" to chat with the sheep. She will tell you to find some kind of doll.
After completing the conversation, go to the back of the room and look for a figurine giggling in the corner. You won’t be able to take her, and if you try to destroy her, you will cause damage to Mairina as well. So choose Shadowheart (or any other priest) and then use "Removing the Curse" on the doll or the sheep itself.
Yalto, who cursed Mairina, will immediately speak to you. There is no way to convince him, so deal with the traitors who worshiped the witch. Be sure to examine his corpse to find Key to Ethel's Lair.
Avenge the Survivors: how to find the safe and prepare Hag's Bane
Chat with Mariina. She will say that Yalto most likely tried to get to the book located in the safe. With her help, you will be able to kill the witch once and for all. The storage is located in the wall in the same room. Open it and take the contents: a dried fairy flower and two books. Read both books to learn a new recipe - The Death of the Hag.
Note: If Mairina previously left with her zombie husband, then you will also find him on the second floor. Apparently, the girl never found a cure for him.
Now open the alchemy menu, go to the pomegranate tab and create a killer elixir from the found flower and any essence. You need to do it before you go to the witch’s new abode.
Where to find the lair of the Hag and Aunt Ethel
Return to The Confused Mermaid and go to the room where you previously encountered Ethel, who was pretending to be the captain. There is a staircase leading down here - go down it and interact with the door to get to the basement of the establishment. Jump on the barrels and walk forward a little. Pass an Investigation check to see that the wall in front of you is an illusion (you can also temporarily wear a whispering mask and you will see it).
Go down even lower, open or break the door and go into a new spacious room. On the right side are the new mask wearers, whose minds have been absorbed by the Hag. If you attack them now and kill them, Ethel will not be able to summon them later. Plus, you will find the Key to Vault No. 1, located in the Accounting Chamber and containing a lot of treasure, and the Spotted Key (possibly opens the chest at the top, which can be reached by mushrooms).
If you secretly bypass the pawns on the left without attacking them, they will take part in the next battle with the Hag, but you will have a chance to save them, including the real Grizzly captain. It is possible that said keys can be stolen from their pockets when they are not hostile towards you.
Note: Inside the cells, by the way, you can find the eyes of the Observer, from which you can prepare a new elixir.
In any case, go left, disarming or bypassing the traps, and then open or break the wooden door. Go to the new room and go up the stairs. As a result, a cut-scene with a witch will begin. Before you go up, make sure you are ready for the fight - the Hag is level 11, so your characters must be at least level 10. Stock up on heals and equip your characters with long-range weapons.
How to save Wanru and kill Aunt Ethel
As during the fight in the first act, the Hag will immediately create copies of herself, which will deal the same amount of damage, but will disappear with a half kick. So first of all, deal with its duplicates. If they are far away, then shoot with a bow (crossbow) with ordinary arrows. Having discovered the real one, take the previously created Hag's Bane and throw it at the witch. As a result, she will spit out Varna and the girl will run away to the far corner, where she will not interfere with your battle.
So, now you will need to destroy 3 pearl bells (ceps growing in the corners of the room). Their location is shown in the pictures below. They are vulnerable to fire, so we recommend using fire arrows or spells. The mushroom must be destroyed in one turn, since at the beginning of the next it restores its entire health bar.
After destroying the mushrooms, concentrate all your attention on the witch. She will not only create copies of herself, but also instantly move from one part of the room to another, so you should not keep all the characters in one place. Finish off the Hag as quickly as possible by hitting her with your most powerful attacks after detection. If there are no mushrooms, then she will not be able to return to life.
Note 1: If you want to save Captain Grizzly and the other masks, then do not attack them after being summoned by the Hag. Only hit the witch and her copies. Once you deal with it, the pawns will become neutral towards you. Unfortunately, like last time, 3 out of 4 will already remain empty shells, so you will only be able to have a normal conversation with the captain. You will be rewarded with Double Tap Inspiration for the Soldier and 275 experience points.
Note 2: It is not necessary to complete side quests with Survivors, nor is it necessary to create the Hag's Bane grenade. During the fight with the witch, switch to non-lethal attacks, and then, without destroying the mushrooms, knock out the monster using only your bare hands or melee weapons. After that, click on it to start a dialogue in which you will have the opportunity to rip open the belly of the Karge and pull Vanra out of it. Now you can destroy the mushrooms and finish off the witch.
Note 3: You can be even more cunning and, before exposing the Hag in the guise of a Grizzly, get the key to her lair from Yalto and make the necessary grenade, and then get in there and destroy 3 mushrooms (don’t touch the masks). Go back upstairs and provoke the witch, and then immediately throw Hag's Bane at her. She will not be able to disappear, and you will be able to finish her off right in the tavern. The video below shows the entire process.
After Ethel's death, do not forget to examine her body to find the Fairy Enchantment Ring. If you kill in the manner indicated in the third note, you can take slightly different items from her corpse.
Claim the legendary rapier Duelist's Prerogative
After defeating the Hag, talk to the girl. She will not be able to put together two words, but will only shout “Mommy” and run away. Now head to Laura's house (X: -63, Y: -90), located in the Lower Town. Its location is shown in the pictures below. Talk to the girl's mother.
For saving her daughter, she will give you the Wind Rider Amulet and the legendary rapier Duelist's Prerogative. This is a very valuable reward, so don't forget to visit the former pirate.
Is it possible to save Mayrina's husband?
Now return to Old Garlow's house and chat with Myrina. Tell her that Ethel is finally dead. As a reward from her, you will receive the Fairy Imitation Amulet, which will help you pass tests for Intelligence, Charisma and Wisdom.
If you previously allowed the girl to leave with her zombie husband and the wand, then Myrina will see that Connor still looks like the living dead, despite the death of the Hag. You can convince (10) her that the man will not return to his original appearance, so he should be released. If successful, she will bid farewell to her husband and use her wand to banish him.
Let's add that if you took the key to the vault from one of the masks, then move to the counting chamber, persuade Meadovukha to give you the pass and go down to the very bottom. Then open the first safe to collect the diamonds and gold.
This will bring the quests “Save Vanru” and “Avenge the Survivors” to an end. The hag Ethel will never come back to life, so the storyline with her can be considered completed.
