In Baldur's Gate 3 Orin is one of the leaders of the Absolute cult and a true master of assassins, whom you will encounter in the third act. She kidnaps one of the protagonist's companions, thereby trying to force him to kill Gortash and bring her the Netherian stone. In this guide we will tell you how to save the victim and defeat Orin the Red in battle.
Where to find Orin the Red
First appearance
The first time you will be able to see Orin the Red is already in the second act, when you will be shown a cut-scene with her, Keteric Torm and Enver Gortash, who are in the illithid colony. You will see that they do not trust each other. However, your first personal meeting with her will be only in Rivington, where she can transform into several different characters:
- Dryad Zethino, who works in the End of Days Circus as a love fortune teller.
- Tiefling Lenz, who works as a journalist and stands between Freygo's bunkhouse and the Temple of the Open Hand.
- Flame Fists fighter Rowan, located near the back wall of the donation barn.
- Blacksmith Gildro Englayron, who works at the Rivington General Store.
- A wounded, nameless Stone Lord thug.
You can independently determine whether the real NPC or Orin in disguise is standing in front of you. The double has level 12, but his health scale will be noticeably less than what a character of this level should have. He is also immune to "crowd control". You can immediately attack the changeling (we advise you to save before doing this), and then he will immediately reveal his identity, skipping the dialogue. Unfortunately, you won't be able to kill the villain.
Let’s add that Orin can only be in one place at a time, so if you leave one of your squad members near the double, you can calmly chat with the rest of the characters listed above and be sure that they are not dummies. By the way, as soon as you reveal two werewolf disguises, the transformations will stop, that is, the remaining NPCs will be real.
Companion Abduction
A little later, if you make a deal with Gortash, you will learn from him that Orin was able to infiltrate the camp in the guise of one of your companions. This will trigger the corresponding scene in the camp during a long rest. She can transform into one of the following characters:
- Laesel
- Gayla
- Halsina
- Mintaru
- Yennu
The choice of companion is not random. First, Orin cannot transform into a hero who is currently in your active squad or you are romanced with. Second, she chooses the companion with whom you currently have the lowest approval level. If none of the indicated companions is suitable, then the villainess transforms into Yenna.
Let us add that each of the kidnapped characters will have its own separate scene, and some of them may end very tragically. However, in all of them, Orin will tell you that she has kidnapped the real companion and plans to offer him as a sacrifice in the Temple of Bhaal if you do not kill Gortash and deliver her the Netherian stone.
Laiezel (how to save Yenna)
Orin, pretending to be Laezel, will bring Yenna to you and try to convince you that the girl is really a changeling. You need to persuade the “companion” to let the child go. To do this, select the following dialogue options:
- What's going on here?
- "Do you have proof?" or “She doesn’t seem to be resisting much...”.
- "Let her go, Laezel (Intimidation)" or "There is something here that we don't see (Persuasion)."
In the latter options, you will have to pass a test for the corresponding parameter (25 units). If you fail, Yenna will die.
Gail
Everything here is quite boring, since the magician will simply begin to threaten everyone with the explosion of the ball and the destruction of Baldur's Gate, under the guise of the common good. Convincing him not to do this doesn't make sense as such, since you'll actually be talking to Orin.
Halsin
In this case, during a long rest, you will discover that the “druid” in the form of a bear attacked Skryab and killed him. Then Khalsin will begin to say that he cannot control himself because of the damage and will decide to commit suicide by picking up a dagger. You can stop him by choosing Dexterity, Persuasion or Medicine. However, even if you fail the check, nothing bad will happen - you will only see Orin in front of you.
Note: If you do not want to allow the dog to die, then, upon learning that Orin has sneaked into the camp, under no circumstances rest in it, but immediately go to Baldur’s Gate and enter the sewer. To do this, you can use the hatch at coordinates X: -160, Y: -62. Then go to the location (X:-141, Y:923) circled in the last screenshot to trigger the non-killing kidnapping scene.
Mintara
During a long rest, a scene will begin in which a drow will call you at night, wanting to tell you something. You will learn that she came across a girl, Yenna, who was allegedly rummaging through her things. Mintara will say that she admitted to her that she was spying on the squad, so she decided to kill the child. You will see a corpse behind the girl.
Note: As in the previous case, you will need to stage the kidnapping scene in the sewer to prevent the girl from dying.
Note: If you previously drove Yenna out of the camp, then Mintara can say that she killed Isobel/Karlach, but she will not show the corpse, but will only point to someone's body under the sheet. We haven't personally tested this version of the event, so it's unclear whether the drow actually kills one of these characters.
Yenna
Take a long rest at the camp to trigger the scene with Yenna (even if you drove her away earlier). The girl will want to show herself as useful, so she will cook you dinner - barbecue on skewers. You can try the dish or refuse to eat it. You'll eventually find out that "Yenna" killed Glutton the cat and cooked him into a barbecue. After this, she will reincarnate as Orin.
Note: As in the previous case, you will need to trim the kidnapping scene in the sewer to prevent the death of the cat.
Abduction in the sewer
If Gortash didn’t tell you about Orin or you just decided to immediately go to the Lower City and then go down to the Sewer (the entrance to it is shown above), then at the indicated point (circled in red) a cut-scene should start in which you a bloody companion or Yenna will run up and tell you about Orin.
You can choose any answer, since in any case, the follower of the Absolute will reveal herself and report that your companion or girl is now in the Temple of Baal and is waiting for the start of the sacrifice ritual.
How to save Orin's victim in Baldur's Gate 3
Orin's requirements
When Orin talks about the hostage in one of the scenes above, you will learn that Gortash was able to bind her blade during the first meeting of the Chosen, so she cannot harm him. For this reason, the follower of the Absolute wants you to do all the dirty work for her. In this case, she will not touch the victim and will even fight with you in a mortal duel for the possession of the Netherian stones.
A small plot fork awaits you here. You can agree to Orin's demands and go after Gortash to pick up his Netherian stone. In this case, a little later you will receive a letter from the villainess in the camp, in which she will congratulate you on killing the lord and invite you to appear before the Murder Tribunal. She will also tell you how to get there: you need to go to Kendalhollow Tombstones (X: 73, Y: 21), located northeast of the “Elven Song”, click on the button under the picture and say the password "Sicarius"
to open the door.
If you do not want to help Orin and meet with Gortash at this point in time, then you will need to complete the task "Solve the murders at the Temple of the Open Hand" to find out information about the desired location and password.
Note: You can also go to Gortash and agree to an alliance with him. In this case, he will advise you to carry out the above investigation to find out where Orin is hiding. Let’s add that you can go to the lord even after the death of Baal’s daughter in order to kill him or join forces.
How to get to the Temple of Bhaal
Regardless of whether you decide to kill Gortash or investigate the murders in the Open Hand, in any case you will have to go to the Murder Tribunal and meet with the “judges” there. Next you will need to either kill interrogator Valeria or fight Sarevok. We talked about this in more detail in separate manual. Either way you can get Amulet of Bhaal which you will need in the future.
Next, go down into the Sewers and get to the "Underground City Ruins" waypoint. (X: -142, Y: 936) or teleport there immediately. In another guide, we described in detail exactly how to get to the specified location. Here we will briefly tell you how to get to Orin. Once in the marked place, you will find a stone door, to open which you need to shoot one of the corpses so that the blood from them flows onto the circle below.
Note: If you have the Amulet of Bhaal, you can tell the door that you have destroyed the Murder Tribunal or become an unholy assassin. In this case, the passage will also open.
Directly to the temple itself is a long winding road to the east. Go through the passage and start going down the stairs down to the bridge in the form of a fallen column. On your way there, you'll be ambushed by Bhaal's gunslinger Gislev and his henchmen (you can spot the enemies early if you pass the Perception check). Deal with the opponents and continue moving down.
When you reach the bridge, walk across it, then turn left and immediately right to the metal door (X: -101, Y: 1022). Having opened it, start going down the steps to the very bottom until you reach the teleportation point “Temple of Bhaal” (X: -52, Y: 1013). On the way down, by the way, you can find clown head drops.
Now walk across the large bridge towards the main entrance to the temple. Be careful, as there are many traps ahead. Go up the steps and interact with the massive doors (X: 0, Y: 1004). Apply the previously obtained Amulet of Bhaal to open the passage. Next, simply go down to the sacrificial stone on which Yenna or one of your companions will lie.
Where to find Orin's mother
Before going down to the stone, you can find the body of Orin's mother, which is located in the Chambers of the Chosen (X: 96, Y: 991) in the temple of Baal. Use the Speak to the Dead spell to find out why Helena tried to kill her daughter. This information will be useful to you in the future.
How to prevent Orin from killing her victim
Direct dialogue
Going down to Orin, you will begin a dialogue with her. If you did not kill Gortash, then she will put her dagger to the prisoner's throat, threatening to kill him (however, even if the lord is dead, Orin will still want to kill the captive companion if you have dealt with Sarevok before). You can choose the following answer to save the victim:
- Stupid. Yes, after Gortash, I will rip your guts out with one left (you need to pass a check for 25 units of Deception).
- Touch her and you'll writhe in agony (requires a 25 Intimidation check).
- Such an offering is worth nothing in the eyes of Baal. It is my blood that you must shed (requires a 25-point Persuasion check).
- I did what you asked. I killed Gortash. Let her go (requires a 25 Persuasion check). “Kill him/her already. Only babies play with food” - in this case, Orin will kill the prisoner.
If you can pass the test for the above parameters, then the villain will ignore the victim and concentrate all her attention on you. After a short conversation, she will turn into a Level 12 Assassin and attack you along with other cultists. Once the battle begins, you can hack the victim's chains to force them to join the fight. Otherwise, the prisoner will thank you after being released and returned to camp.
If you talked to Orin's mother
If you found the corpse of Orin's mother and spoke with the deceased, then you will have an additional dialogue option that you should definitely select:
- Like the rescue your mother offered? She attacked you on Sarevok's orders.
By choosing this answer, you will immediately distract Orin from her victim - she will get up and head towards your group, believing that you lied to her. Next, you can select one of the following replicas:
- How pathetic you are. No wonder he fooled you so easily.
- Sarevok himself told me about this. Taunting you (requires a 25 Deception check).
- Baal loves such cruel betrayals. Did you think that he would make an exception for you? (requires a 25 Deception check).
- Of the two of us, I'm not the one who needs help.
If you choose any option without the check or fail to pass it, Orin will soon take on the form of the Assassin and attack you. If you pass the test, the girl will begin to doubt her god and then Baal will forcibly transform her into the Assassin, and you will still have to fight her.
Open the victim's chains
If you are confident in your lockpicking and stealth skills, then drink the invisibility potion, go to the sacrificial stone, enter stealth mode and select the “Pick” option. Next, you will need to pass a Sleight of Hand test (25 units).
If successful, you will open the chain, and Orin will be angry at your attempt and will be distracted from her victim without trying to kill him. Let's add that you can also try to immediately attack the villainess in stealth mode, without allowing her to harm the victim (not tested).
Dark temptation
If you chose this origin, then before entering the temple you will meet Sceleritas Gnus, who considers Orin an impostor and is confident that it is you who should take the position of the Chosen One. The sectarians also don’t like Sarevok’s “granddaughter”, so they are waiting for the return of the real leader.
During the dialogue with Orin, you will learn that she is to blame for all your troubles with the parasite. Then there will be another unique dialogue in which you can choose a line to turn into a Killer:
- Show Orin all the greatness of Bhaal's favorite: summon the Assassin.
In this case, the girl will not be able to turn into a monster and will continue to fight you in her human form. You will then be able to once again take on the form of a monster if it is removed, without the need for a long rest in the camp.
How to defeat Orin the Red in Baldur's Gate 3
Whichever option you choose above, you will still have to fight Orin the Red, who will take the form of the Assassin. In her humanoid form, she will use the Bloodthirst dagger and the Crimson Trouble sword.
Preparing for battle
Before attacking Orin the Red, take a moment to take note of the cultists in the ritual circles and the characteristics of the Deathbringer of Bhaal. Without knowledge of each, you could be wasting important resources and time that you will need to win.
First of all, remember that the enemy has Unstoppable. If you have previously fought with Gislev, then this information should alert you. The fact is that this trait reduces the damage from the next attack to one, while consuming one charge of Unstoppable. Creatures with this buff cannot be moved from their place by external influence (physical or magical).
This monster has 7 (12) charges of Unstoppability, that is, it can withstand 7 (12) any attacks, receiving only 1 point of damage. At first glance, this may seem like an unpleasant, but very surmountable obstacle, but the main difficulty of this battle is that Orin's Unstoppableness refreshes at the end of each round.
Note: This condition is only true if you are not fighting Orin as Dark Seduction. Let us remind you once again that then you can take the form of the Killer, and the villain will remain in her human form.
At the beginning of the battle, Orin will only have two active opponents among her allies. All other reapers will be busy repeating the ritual to restore Unstoppable charges to the Assassin.
All singing cultists are protected Asylum, that is, you can only damage them with area-of-effect spells, so we recommend using Fireball or Ice Storm against them.
Once you kill Orin the Red, if there are any of her minions left in the arena, they will become invisible and stop their ritual. These enemies will then attack your heroes, removing their Shelter and leaving them vulnerable to attack.
Note: Cultists are able to use spells that affect your movement and actions by imposing various effects (for example, Slow). So we advise you to take with you a character who can use Counterspell.
If you fail to defeat Orin on the first turn or you are still focused on killing other cultists, she will put the bloody Mark of Bhaal on them “Let the carnage begin.” Killing any marked creature (including the death of your own team members) will increase the Assassin's armor class.
So you either need to try to kill all or most of the cultists in one turn, or ignore them until you deal with the Deathbringer of Bhaal.
Tactics for fighting Orin the Red
It's tempting to start the battle by using powerful area-of-effect spells to kill the cultists quickly, but you may not have time to kill them all. Plus, if you let Orin survive for more than two rounds, she will cause a huge problem for your party, given her strength and abilities.
Thus, the best way to win this fight is to focus all your attention on Orin with the goal of killing her on the first turn. This is quite possible by using characters and spells that can deal multiple hits in one attack. By the way, this will also allow you to unlock the achievement "First blood".
It was possible to determine that the most effective method of dealing with Orin is associated with the use of:
- A wizard or other spellcaster with a Magic Missile.
- A monk with the ability Flurry of Blows.
- A warrior with an additional attack and Rush to Action.
Magic Shooting is by far the best option to combat Orin's Unstoppable, since at level 5 she is able to remove absolutely all of the barrier's charges (if there are 7 of them), sacrificing a little of their damage. However, damage is not important here, since any of your attacks will in any case deal only 1 unit of damage to the monster.
Note: If you have a Trickster or another character who goes before your caster, you can use a Magic Arrow of a lower level.
After removing the Killer's shield charges, use all of your most powerful attacks to deal maximum damage to him or even kill him. Luckily, Orin has relatively low armor and low health, making her an easy target for you. So your winning strategy might look like this:
- On the first turn, the Trickster or whatever character goes first gets the first hits on Orin. It will be nice if he removes at least 1-2 charges of Unstoppable.
- After the Cultists and Assassin are gone, take the Wizard and attack the enemy with a level 4-5 Magic Missile to remove all or most of the Unstoppable charges.
- If one of the cultists uses a stun on your Warrior or another key fighter, then cast an even higher level Magic Missile to send the remaining projectiles towards the cultist to break his concentration.
- When it's your Warrior's turn, attack Orin three times, use Rush and hit her three more times. If you're lucky, you'll finish off the monster.
- At the end, with your Cleric or other support character, start preparing to fight the remaining enemies. He can also finish off Orin if the Warrior misses a couple of times.
Of course, you don't have to follow this tactic exactly, but using Magic Missiles in combination with powerful melee attacks is a win-win option in this battle. Again, instead of a spellcaster or warrior, you can use a monk.
How to defeat the Reapers of Bhaal
Having dealt with Orin, you will then have to defeat the reapers of Bhaal. They do not pose a significant threat to your squad, but fighting them is quite tedious. After stopping the ritual, they use invisibility and only then attack you to deliver hidden attacks.
Let us remind you that until the moment the cultists attack you, they will still be under shelter. For this reason, we advise you to use Ice Storm and Spiritual Guardians to simultaneously identify enemies and deal damage to them.
We recommend that you place your two most durable characters at the bottom of the stairs, and your spellcasters and marksmen about the middle of the stairs, to remain out of reach of enemies and provide your allies with support from above. Spiritual guards should also be placed at the bottom of the ladder so that they can detect reapers trying to get past your tanks.
Continue to identify enemies with area attacks, and then finish them off in close combat. This process can take quite a long time, so be patient.
Rewards for killing Orin the Red
Immediately after defeating the Assassin and his minions, you will receive the Netherian Stone Orin (necessary for the main plot) and 1000 experience points. Then be sure to examine the “Pile of Orin’s Flesh” lying on the floor to pick up some useful things from it:
- Legendary sword “Scarlet Trouble”, characteristics are shown below.
- Legendary dagger “Bloodthirst”, characteristics are shown below.
- Rare Studded Leather Armor +2 (light armor).
- Key to the altar - with it you can remove the chains from the prisoner if he is still alive.
This is all the useful information about Orin in Baldur's Gate 3 that may be useful to you. We hope that she will help find the follower of Baal, save her victim and win the unequal battle.
