There are three main endings that you can unlock in Sons of the Forest, depending on your final decision and your relationship with your companions. In this guide, we will briefly describe exactly how you can get to the final, and what actions lead to one or another ending. We will also try to explain some plot points.

Note: Of course, the article contains serious SPOILERS to the plot of the game. Therefore, if you have not gone through it at least once on your own, then we do not recommend reading the text presented here, so as not to spoil your impressions.

How to unlock all endings in Sons of the Forest

At this point in time, there are three different endings that can be obtained in the game, and two of them have small ramifications depending on your actions during the game. In general, they can be divided into bad (terrible), neutral (good) and best endings. We add that a separate achievement is associated with each of them.

How to get to the end of the game

At present, Sons of the Forest lacks a coherent story with lengthy cutscenes, a lot of footage explaining exactly what is happening on the island, and extended dialogue between characters. Therefore, the whole plot is now based on the fact that you need to find a number of key items in a certain sequence:

    1. Look for cable thrower And scuba to access shovel.
    2. Look for staff key card in an underground bunker.
    3. Look for VIP key card in a hideout in a cave.
    4. Look for guest key card in a hideout in a cave.
    5. Look for golden armor in an underground bunker.

Having obtained all the indicated items, and still having little idea of what exactly happened on the island, go to the final bunker and use the golden armor to open the mysterious door with a handprint. We told more about finding these gates in separate guide. We advise you to save before going through the unlocked passage - this way you can open several endings at once or continue exploring the island.

You will find yourself in a lava cave, where you will encounter demons - incredibly strong mutants. Fortunately, the path here will be linear, so you are unlikely to get lost. Just go ahead, and soon you will find a strange "golden room" ahead, next to which you will meet Timmy (if you don't remember, this is the boy you saved in the first part). Enter this room.

Note: If Kelvin is alive, and you have become friends with Virginia, then they will also enter the golden room with you. A mysterious girl in a silver jacket will also try to penetrate her, but she will not be able to do this.

Next, watch a stunning cut-scene, after which you will find yourself on the beach next to a helicopter from which an elderly man (Eric LeBlanc, Timmy's father) will exit. Now you have to make an important decision.

How to unlock the bad (terrible) ending

    Requirements:

    • Kelvin's condition: doesn't matter.
    • Virginia's condition and her attitude towards you: doesn't matter.
    • You must stay on the island.

When you are prompted to board the helicopter, you will need to turn around and pick up a backpack that is lying on the beach and highlighted with an exclamation mark. After that, you will see how the helicopter flies away without you, leaving the hero with no chance of evacuation in the future. Only in this ending will you be able to continue exploring the island after completing the story and unlock the trophy "Fighting Demons".

The bad version of this ending assumes that Calvin and Virginia survived. In this case, the first will fly away from the island, regardless of your decision, and the second will remain on it, even if you have not improved relations with her. We consider the version where all your companions died to be terrible.

How to unlock the neutral (good) ending

    Requirements:

    • Kelvin's condition: doesn't matter.
    • Virginia's condition and attitude towards you: she may be dead, but if she is alive, then she should not consider you her friend (in case Kelvin is also alive).
    • You must leave the island.

When you are prompted to board the helicopter, do not refuse and press the "E" key. As a result, you will sit in a rotorcraft and fly away from the island along with Timmy and Eric. The neutral ending is the one in which you were able to leave this cursed place, even if Calvin and Virginia died.

A good version assumes that Kelvin is alive - in this case, he will fly off the island with you. Virginia may die or simply not make friends with you. In the latter version, she will remain on the island. As a result, you will unlock the achievement "Fought the Demons".

How to unlock the best ending

    Requirements:

    • Kelvin's condition: must not die.
    • The state of Virginia and her attitude towards you: she must not die and must consider you her friend.
    • You must leave the island.

When you are prompted to board the helicopter, do not refuse and press the "E" key. In doing so, you must form a good relationship with Virginia and also not let her and Kelvin perish. In this case, you will all leave the island together and receive an achievement "Keep Your Friends Close".

You will understand that you are friendly enough with the girl if she also enters the golden room at the end of the story. If this doesn't happen, then load the save in the final bunker and continue to survive on the island with Virginia, rebuilding the base and fighting off the monsters.

If your companions still died, and you do not want to start a new game, then you can simply use cheats or change game files. We've covered how to do this in our companion guides.

How to unlock the secret ending

It can also be considered the most terrible ending. When control over the character returns to you, stand near the helicopter and jump up so that the blades of the machine cut off the head of the main character. This moment will look especially dramatic if Virginia and Kelvin died.

Sons of the Forest ending explained

    Golden cube

The golden room you enter at the end of the game is actually a mysterious cube-shaped artifact found by corporations. The Pufftons eventually bought the island and built several bunkers on it to further study extraterrestrial technology.

The activation of the golden cube occurs every 8 cycles, however, it is currently unclear exactly how much time passes before the next activation of the artifact. The exact time must be known to Timmy, as he kept a laptop with a timer indicating the object's next activation.

The purpose of the artifact is to move the creatures in it to other dimensions. Players are even shown one of these places - a futuristic city with giant skyscrapers and spaceships. Other worlds can be seen in the Puffton Gallery.

Why is it about another dimension, and not, for example, an alien world located in another galaxy? This is hinted at by a book written by Tim, dedicated to parallel realities and ways to move between them (it can be found on the island). This is also indirectly confirmed by the existence of mutants.

    Origin of mutants

Everyone who is inside the cube moves to other worlds, and those who are outside it turn into mutants - this is due to the fact that different versions of a person from different realities merge with each other. Therefore, monsters often have several limbs or are Siamese twins. This is also indicated by the appearance of several copies of Timmy when the artifact is activated. Recall that the guy is still under the threat of mutation due to the events of the first part.

At the same time, the golden cube has a limited radius of influence. The closer people are to it, the stronger the effect. Therefore, in caves and bunkers, people and natives turned into monsters, and on the surface, the natives simply lost their minds, becoming cannibals. In the security room of one of the shelters, by the way, you can see exactly how the monstrosification takes place.

Some believe that demons are not mutated humans, but are in fact beings from another dimension. This is indicated by their very unusual appearance and spontaneous combustion from the cross. However, in patch 1.01, the developers added two mini-bosses to the game: Edvara and Barbara Pafftanov. So the latter is very similar to the demon. Therefore, most likely, those who are very close to the artifact turn into these monsters.

As for Tim, he most likely came to the island to learn more about the effect of the golden cube and find a way to cure himself, because, sooner or later, he will also turn into a mutant.

    Virginia Puffton

With her, everything is rather confusing, since it is unclear exactly when she mutated. Some believe that this happened long before the events of the second part due to the impact of an artifact from the Forest. Perhaps it was for this reason that Edward Puffton bought the island and studied the golden cube - he hoped thereby to cure his daughter. Others are sure that this happened on the island - this is indicated by the mutation of the girl's parents (however, it is not clear why Virginia got off with only extra limbs).

After the death of her parents, Virginia becomes the new owner of the corporation and the entire Puffton fortune. Perhaps, together with Eric and Tim, she will continue to study the artifacts in order to find a cure for the mutation and prepare an expedition to other dimensions.

The man in the silver jacket

This female agent was most likely sent by the new owner of Sahara Therapeutics, the company from the first part. Apparently, the management of the corporation knew about the golden cube, but they did not know exactly how it works, so it was decided to send their best operative to the island.

For this reason, the girl shot down the helicopter, but at the same time left the protagonist alive. Most likely, she thought that the hero knew something about the cube, being a member of Puffton's security team, and figured that he could lead her to him, which eventually happened. True, she failed to enter the cube, which caused her to transform into a monster.

In general, the plot in Sons of the Forest turned out to be very fleeting, although at the end it surprises the players with its scale. It still has questions that simply don't have answers. However, the same could be said about the first part when it was released in early access. Therefore, let's hope that the developers will continue to develop the game, expanding its history and lore.
