In Baldur's Gate 3 The Temple of Bhaal is a special location where you need to get to according to the plot in the third act. Here you can complete two important quests at once: "Save Orin's Victim" and “Get the Netherian Stone Orin.” However, finding and opening the entrance to this area is not so easy, and along the way you will have to fight with quite strong opponents, including the archer assassin of Baal Gislev.
In this guide, we will tell you in detail how to find and open a passage to the ruins of the Underground City in the Sewers, as well as defeat Gislev, enter the Temple of Bhaal, explore it and find Mother Orin.
Note: You can go to the Temple of Bhaal after your first visit to the Lower City, but you will not be able to enter its main part without having the Amulet of Bhaal with you. For this reason, we advise you to wait to find this location until you complete the tasks "Solve the murders at the Temple of the Open Hand" (or you won’t kill Gortash) and "Impress the Murder Tribunal".
How to get to the Undercity in Baldur's Gate 3
How to get down to the Lower City Sewers
First of all, you will need to get into the sewer system of Baldur's Gate, since this is where the passage to the Underground City is located, where the Temple of Bhaal is located. You can get there through 6 main entrances, some of which you can easily find while exploring the city, while others are associated with completing certain quests or actions. Next, we will consider each of them separately.
Basilisk Gate
One of the simplest ways. From the Basilisk Gate, go a little to the northwest and in the alley under the stone arch (bridge) you will find a hatch - interact with it to go underground. Once in the new area, break the wall on the left side with any blunt weapon and you will finally fall into the sewer.
Note: Note that if you instead of going into the gassy sewer area, go up the stairs, you will find yourself near the door leading to the Guild Tavern with Ninefingers. If you break the second wall and turn right, you will reach the back entrance to the Emperor's Refuge.
Bloomridge Park
The second easiest way to get into the sewer. To do this, you need to find a hatch (X: -160, Y: -62) located south of Bloomridge Park and use it. The exact location is shown in the screenshots below.
Guild Tavern
First, enter the Guild Tavern by going through Thasgront. Once inside, find the door "No entry or exit"
, located on the left side of the bar. To open it, you will have to pass a Sleight of Hand check.
Nine-Fingered Office
Still in the same Guild Tavern, go to Nine-Fingered's office, then interact with the bookshelf in the bedroom and pass a Sleight of Hand check (25 points) to unlock the secret entrance leading to the sewers.
Note that by walking along the wooden beam, you can find a safe door ahead, to open which you need to pass a Sleight of Hand test (30 points). Inside you will find luxurious chests containing valuable items. Here, break open the double doors (Sleight of Hand 25), behind which there will be another chest with things.
The Emperor's Old Hideout
From the Elvensong Tavern you can get to the Emperor's Old Refuge. At the very end (on the eastern side) you can find a hatch that leads straight to the city sewer.
Flimm's loads
Go to the basement of “Flimm's Cargoes” for the quest “Avenge the Drowned” and head to the area with cameras. On the right side (immediately after entering the indicated area), go forward along the corridor to a dead end, and you will see a descent down.
Mrs. Jannat's estate
On the south side of Mrs. Jannat's estate, you can find a door on the ground floor marked "Do Not Enter." This door leads to the Abandoned Tank in the Sewers. However, it can only be opened from the other side when completing the quest "High Harpist" and the salvation of Minsk.
How to get to the ruins of the Underground City
Regardless of which path into the sewers you choose, you will in any case have to move north, since that is where the passage to the Underground City is located. We will show the route from the hatch near the Basilisk Gate, thereby examining most of the southeastern part of the sewer system.
The map above shows the entire sewer and the approximate route we advise you to take to get to the desired passage. Note that if you are interested in exploring the western part of the location, where the puzzle with the Abandoned Tank is located, then study our Minsk search guide.
So, going down, break through two walls to open the way to a room with green gas. Jump down with a poison immune character and interact with the lever to remove the poisonous mist. You can also simply fly over or run through the gas clouds. Move to the large double door to the west and go through it.
Ahead you'll find Bhaal cultists standing on the top platform shooting at the refugees - deal with them and then continue west to the door (X: -37, Y: 795) in the left corner (you can go down and examine the bodies of the refugees). Go west again, avoiding the traps, and break into the next door with a 15 Sleight of Hand check.
Note: You can also shoot the lever on the wall on the right side, where the water channel is, to summon a raft that you can use to sail to the northern stop. However, we chose the walking route.
Once you enter a new area, turn right and start walking north. By the way, if you turn left and go southwest into the cave, you will find Arabella there. So, after walking in a northerly direction, you will reach a bridge with fat balls leading to the west. If you step on it, a video will immediately begin with Aelis Siriusius.
We are talking about a mad magician who considers you followers of the Absolute, and therefore decides to kill you. You can convince him otherwise to avoid battle by choosing dialogue options of Intimidate, Deceive, or Persuade (18-20 counts). If you fail the negotiations, then you will face a fight with a fairly strong sorcerer, as well as mephits, fat elementals and fat balls.
Note: If you are not sure that you can convince or defeat Aelis, you can simply bypass him without entering the bridge, but by going a little further north, and only then going west (the bypass route is shown on the map above).
Behind the magician you can find the skeleton of Sarin without a head, and a little higher - a lattice gate, behind which there is a chest. You will need to go down the stairs to the north. You will find yourself in a spacious tunnel. Continue north, going through the doors and up one of the two stairs.
Along the way, you can find loose stones (check for Attention), which will contain valuable things, including a painted key and an unfinished diary. Once you go through the passage, you will find yourself in the ruins of the Underground City.
How to open a stone door
Run forward past the waterfall until you see a circle on the floor ahead and a stone door on the right side. On the left you can find the silent penitent Bedeki, from whom you can purchase several interesting items. If you go further west, you will find yourself in the Ancient Lair, where you can get parts of the mystical scavenger.
So, interact with the door. She will ask you to show proof of faith in Baal. If you have already completed the task "Impress the Murder Tribunal", having dealt with Sarevok or becoming an unholy killer, then show the amulet, and then tell me how exactly you were able to get it (killed the judges or went through the ritual).
If you have not completed the mission yet, but still want to explore the Underground City, then select an archer, and then shoot one of the corpses suspended above the stone circle so that their blood sprinkles the floor. You can also put one of the companions on this circle and hit it. True, this may lead to a decrease in approval from the companion.
Where to find the Temple of Bhaal in Baldur's Gate 3
Having opened the door in one way or another, you will finally be able to go into the main part of the ruins of the Underground City, where the entrance to the Temple of Baal is actually located. The map below shows the entire route and main signs.
How to defeat the archer assassin of Baal Gislev
Go through the passage and start going down the stairs down to the bridge in the form of a fallen column. On your way there, you'll be ambushed by Bhaal's gunslinger Gislev and his henchmen (you can spot the enemies early if you pass the Perception check).
Note that this enemy performs a ritual that lasts 5 turns, at the end of which he can instantly kill any member of your group by uttering Bhaal's Word of Power: Death. So it is highly recommended to deal with him as soon as possible. The pictures below show the location of the enemies. Note that Gislev teleports down after taking damage.
Note: If you want to avoid this battle (losing experience and valuable items), you can simply make the entire squad invisible (you can use potions), and then run across the bridge and enter the metal door (shown below after the battle section).
Note that Gislev and some of his minions have Unstoppable. This trait reduces the damage of your next attack to 1, while consuming one charge of Unstoppable. Creatures with this buff cannot be moved from their place by external influence (physical or magical).
Therefore, if an enemy has 5 Unstoppable charges, then you need to hit him 5 times for only 5 damage to remove his shield. Only your 6th attack will be able to deal full damage to him. So the best option here would be spells that can fire multiple charges at once, for example, a level 4 Magic Missile can remove the barrier from Gislev in one turn.
In order not to provoke other opponents who are waiting for you further to the north, we do not advise you to go through the bridge ahead. Instead, move your heroes to the cliff with the archers using teleportation or flight with a speed potion. The arrows are located in the Shelter, so until they attack you, you can only damage them with area-of-effect spells.
Leaving a few characters to deal with the archers, take a caster or other ranged hero and take him to the edge of the cliff so he can reach Gislev. Shoot him with a Magic Arrow or shoot him with a bow several times to knock down Unstoppable. Then use the second mage to hit him with your most powerful spell. If you're lucky, you'll kill him.
Note: A warrior (for example, Laiezel) can try to jump to Gislev, and then remove Unstoppable from him (you will need a Call to Action) and simply push him down, instantly killing him.
If Gislev remains alive, he will teleport down (the corresponding point is shown in yellow). You can send your fighter there (by flying, teleporting, etc.) or simply stand in the area circled in orange and shoot the enemy with long-range attacks.
How to open the entrance to the Temple of Baal
Having eliminated the main threat to your team, finish off the remaining cultists, who should not cause you any problems. Go down to the bridge, walk along it and turn left (before this you can examine the western part of the location, where you will encounter additional enemies and find a couple of useful things). Then go through the triangular passage and immediately turn right towards the metal door.
You will find yourself near the stairs. Go down it to the first fork. If you continue north, you'll reach the Change Pond docks, where you can fight a whole pack of brain rats. So continue down the stairs until you reach the second fork. You can reach the Temple of Bhaal teleport along any path, but we recommend taking the left one to find clown head drops.
Having reached the portal down, walk along the large bridge towards the main passage to the temple. Be careful, as there are many traps ahead. Go up the steps and interact with the massive doors (X: 0, Y: 1004). Apply the previously obtained amulet of Baal to open a passage leading to the temple of Baal itself.
Where to find Orin's mother Helena
Upon entering the temple, you can immediately go down the steps to the sacrificial stone and Orin to rescue the prisoner and fight the follower of Bhaal. However, we instead advise you to first go to the chambers of the chosen one, located behind the altar. To do this, you will need to turn left and go forward to the very end.
Then climb through the hole on the left (X: 72, Y: 1031), go down a little and go through the open passage to reach the chambers of the chosen one. You can find a lot of interesting things here, but the most useful find will be the corpse of Helena, Orin's mother (X: 96, Y: 991).
Apply on body "Talking to the Dead" to find out that it was Sarevok who ordered Helena to kill Orin. This information will be useful to you during a conversation with Baal's chosen one. With its help, you can avoid the death of the victim without passing any checks.
