Rescue Wulbren and tieflings in Baldur's Gate 3: how to escape from the Moonrise Towers Prison

    Zorthrus

In Baldur's Gate 3 "Save the Tieflings" and "Save Wulbren" are two side quests in Act 2 that require you to rescue prisoners from the prison located in the Towers of the Moon. In this guide, we will tell you where to find prisoners and Wulbren's hammer, and how you can rescue them from the dungeon even without a fight.

It is important to know: These quests have no time limits, so you can rest in the camp as much as you like, but you must complete them before heading to the Shadowfell for the Song of Night, otherwise you will not find the prisoners, and their corpses will then end up in Balthazar's pit.

How to save tieflings and Wulbren in Baldur's Gate 3

    How to start quests

If you completed the mission "Save the Dwarves at Grimforge", then you should already know about the existence of Wulbren and that he was kidnapped and sent to the Lunar Towers, that is, the task to rescue him should appear in your journal already in the first act. Otherwise, it starts when you find this character in a prison cell (his location is shown below).

As for tieflings, the task with them will appear only if you have completed the quest "Save the Refugees", protecting the Emerald Grove from goblins. Then get to the Last Light Tavern and talk to Ceris there. She will tell you that the refugees were ambushed by cultists and many were kidnapped. Next, chat with Alfira, who is sitting nearby, and Rolan. Bex can be found a little further north, under the bridge. She will tell you about the kidnapping of Danis. As a result, you will promise them to find the abducted ones.

Where to find tieflings and Wulbren

First of all, you will need to get to the Moon Towers, located in the southwestern part of the map. The screenshot below shows their location. There are several ways to overcome the dark curse and get to the right place.

After speaking with Ketheric Torm, you'll be free to explore the towers, so head straight to the prison. You can get there either by stairs (X: -172, Y: -195) located on the ground floor east of the audience hall, or through the door outside in the docks.

If you go down the stairs, then move west until you find yourself in a corridor with cages. At the fork, turn right and in the second prison cell on the right side you will find Leah, with whom you can talk.

When you try to start a conversation with prisoners, you may be stopped by a guard who will inform you that the prisoners are the property of Balthazar and cannot be spoken to without his permission. You will need to pass a Deception or Persuasion check (14) to continue the conversation. By the way, if you enter the cell using Misty Step or Gaseous Form, the guards will not stop you.

Now enter into dialogue with Leah. In some cases, she may be distrustful of the main character, considering him a follower of the Absolute (if you have not sent the guard before). You can either take a Persuasion check or mention names she knows, like Rolan. After this, the tieflings will say that the gnomes in the next chamber are up to something, so they will advise you to communicate with them.

Next, go to another cell a little further and chat with Wulbren Bongle. He will treat you with distrust. If you previously helped Bark Root by completing quests "Save the Dwarf" And "Save the Dwarves at Grimforge", then you can say that it was he who sent you, and then you won’t have to go through any checks. Otherwise, say that you want to get everyone out (Persuasion 10), the Absolute is not your order (Persuasion 6) or you are a secret agent of the Fire Fist (Deception 6).

    Where to find Wulbren's Hammer

The gnome will tell you that he needs tools capable of crushing stone, since the Warden took their things for herself. Let us immediately note that any weapon capable of causing crushing damage, for example, an ordinary mace, is suitable for Vulbren. If you still decide to pick up the hammer, you will have to go to the valuables storage room.

There are two ways to get there. Firstly, directly through the warden’s office along the iron stairs. However, this area is considered forbidden, so if the boss discovers you, you will have to pay her or try to talk your teeth into it (pass a Deception, Intimidation or Persuasion check at a difficulty level of 15).

Secondly, covertly along wooden platforms on the outside of the structure. We recommend choosing this option as it is less risky. Right place (X: 559, Y: -660) to jump onto the wooden platforms is shown in the pictures below. After entering the vault, you will find the All-Seeing Eye here, which must be destroyed immediately so that it does not cause an alarm.

Note: From the wooden platforms you can also try to quietly eliminate the other all-seeing eyes that hover on the first level. This will help you in the future to quietly kill the guards.

Inside, find Vulbren's hammer, which lies on the table, not far from the chain mail shirt. Open other chests (pass a 16 Sleight of Hand check to crack them) to find jewelry and Hoop of the last line. You can steal the prison key from the warden to easily unlock all the chests (one of them may also contain your things if you find yourself behind bars).

Having obtained a hammer (Wulbren will be most pleased with it) or any crushing weapon, return to the gnome and throw him the tool through the grate (you can also chat with him and give the item through the exchange screen). Chat with him again. Tell him "Wait, I'll be back soon" , since you still need to complete a couple of things to facilitate the escape of prisoners.

Note: If you hand over the hammer and ask the gnomes to wait, but take a quick trip out of the area or take a long rest at the camp, the gnomes will begin to escape without you, which, of course, will not end well. If you are afraid that you may forget about this, then it would be better not to give the weapon to Wulbren at all until you deal with the guards.

There are several simple ways to save prisoners without any sacrifice on their part. You can either cut the chains from the boat in advance and at the same time break through the walls in the dungeons, or covertly kill the guards before escaping. We will consider both options.

Break the chains from the boat and bring down the walls

Walk to the rock ledge (X: 542, Y: -651) in the southwestern part of the location and jump on it, after first climbing onto the box on the left, as shown in the picture below (you can also try using a character with high Strength). Now move to the docks to the northeast - there will be a gap, but you can easily jump over it.

On the right you will find a wall behind which there are gnomes, but you don't need it yet, so turn left and go to the boat. You will find that she is tied to the pier with two chains - you will need to cut them. To do this, give your character a slashing weapon and start hitting the chains until you break them.

Now divide the squad, give two warriors a crushing weapon and place one near the wall to the gnomes' chamber, and the other near the wall to the tieflings' chamber. Destroy the tieflings' wall first, and then the gnomes' wall, and run with them to the boat. A dialogue will immediately begin in which you should choose the first answer, that is, sail away with the prisoners to the “Last Light” (or you can try to stay, advising the prisoners to go to the tavern).

Note: If you only have one character capable of wielding a blunt weapon, you can give the hammer to Wulbren and leave one of his companions near him. Tell him it's time to run, then quickly break the tieflings' wall.

As a result, the guards will not have time to reach the prisoners, and they will safely sail away from the prison. If you stay on the shore, the guards will most likely become hostile towards you, so you will have to kill them. Fortunately, the rest of the inhabitants of the Lunar Towers will not change their attitude towards your group.

Kill the guards quietly in advance

If you do not have crushing and slashing weapons or characters who can use them effectively, then you can try to covertly kill the guards. Be sure to destroy the all-seeing eyes while standing on the upper platform, as we showed just above. Then deal with the warden in her office - you need to do this quickly.

Having dealt with her, take the Amulet of the Essence of Enchantment from her corpse (restores spell cells). In this room you will find levers that open the doors of the cells, but do not touch them yet (tieflings are not very smart and when they open the cells they will immediately run straight into the clutches of the guards). From time to time, other guards will visit this room, so you can kill them one by one.

If this method seems too slow to you, then simply leave the office and attack the nearest guards or try to kill them unnoticed. Again, attacking the guards will not make other inhabitants of the towers hostile. When you have dealt with all the enemies, give the hammer to Vulbren and tell him that he can begin.

Now interact with the lever to open all the cells and follow the prisoners through them (meaning you don't have to go around the ledge). Wait until they cut the chains themselves, and then talk to them. Tell them to sail to the Last Light. You can go with them or stay in the towers.

Note: Given the availability of such simple methods of escape, we will not consider the usual option of fighting with guards. If you chose him, then we will only advise you to try to hold back the guards near the boss’s office so that they cannot reach the prisoners. Let's add that tieflings can lag behind the gnomes. In this case, Vulbren will sail away without them if more than 3 turns pass after cutting the chains.

Where to find Wulbren after escaping

Note: If you set sail with prisoners, your group will have to be tested for Dark Curse upon arrival. Persuade the escapees not to resist this simple procedure.

To complete the quest to save the gnomes, you will need to chat with them. Travel to the Last Light Tavern and enter the tavern. To the right of the fireplace you will find Vulbren - chat with him to complete his quest. You can ask him for a reward, ultimately receiving a little more than 600 gold coins.

Where to find Roland, Bex and Alfira

Now talk to Alfira, who is sitting opposite Wulbren, and watch the reunion scene. If all tieflings have been rescued from prison, you will receive a rich reward, including a Mighty Mantle.

Rolan will also be in the tavern, a little further from Alfira. If you delayed saving the prisoners for too long, then Rolan will decide to save them on his own by going to the Moon Towers. In this case, you will find him on the Ruined Battlefield (X: -38, Y: -100), where he will fight with the shadows - help him, and then tell him about the surviving tieflings. From him you will receive 600 gold.

At the end, chat with Bex, who will still be waiting for you under the bridge north of the tavern. You will not receive a reward from it, but the quest “Save the tieflings” in the journal will finally move into the completed category.
