In Hogwarts Legacy spells are the most important element of the gameplay, on which many other game mechanics are based. It is with the help of them that you can solve puzzles, fight enemies, look for hidden objects, take care of magical animals, change the Help-room and explore locations.
In this guide, we will cover all the enchantments available in the game, as well as how to learn, use and improve them. You will also learn about the best spells and the most effective spell combinations for combat. In addition, if you open all the spells in the game, you will receive the achievement "Spellmaster".
How to unlock new spells in Hogwarts Legacy
Many spells will become available to you as part of the main story missions, that is, it will be impossible to miss them. Other enchantments can be unlocked only after completing tasks from professors, which are optional and unlock as you progress through the story, that is, you won’t be able to learn all types of magic in the first hours of the game.
Separately, unforgivable spells should be indicated, which are not only associated with one specific quest chain, but can also be permanently closed for the player to study if the wrong answers were chosen during the dialogue with a specific character (more on this below).
As for the study of enchantment itself, it is a small mini-game in which you just need to press certain buttons or keys shown on the screen in time. If you fail, you can try again.
How to use spells
All enchantments in Hogwarts: Legacy can be roughly divided into two broad categories: basic (important) and slot enchantments. The former do not occupy free cells in sets, as they have their own buttons (keys) for use or are used only under certain conditions. We are talking about such spells as Revelio or Protego, without which not a single battle or inspection of locations can do.
The latter take up places in sets and are often more situational than the main spells. Some of them have a rollback time, that is, they cannot be used continuously. You can instantly access the desired spells using the quick access option (you can place the necessary spells in the slots in the spell menu).
You can change sets of four spells (diamond with icons in the lower right corner) by pressing the number keys or holding the right trigger of the controller. In total, you can unlock 4 sets (opened in a branch with Key talents), that is, you can get quick access to 16 types of enchantments.
Properly distribute spells in sets to create effective combat combinations. We have covered this in detail at the end of the guide.
How to improve spells
It will be possible to enhance existing enchantments in the Talents menu when you gain access to it. Despite the fact that only one section has the name "Spells", in fact, almost all the skills presented here are aimed at improving certain "spells", so we advise you to study all the skills.
We add that even with the maximum leveling of the character (40th level) it will not work to open all the talents, so try to improve those spells that you use most often. You should also be sure to increase the number of quick access kits in the "Key" section.
In addition, you can enhance spells by adding the appropriate bonuses or stats to your equipment with loom installed in Help-room. Blueprints with buffs can be found in chests located in bandit camps. Next, we will look at all the spells and how to learn them.

The best spells and combinations
Given the impossibility of adding all spells to the quick menu and the presence of non-combat spells, which are also desirable to always keep at hand, we would like to highlight a few "spells" that, in our opinion, are the most useful for the player in battle:
- Incendio and Confringo - we decided to separate them together, since both are fire spells and are used quite often (it is advisable to keep them in the same set). They are extremely effective when fighting spiders and infernals. In this case, the first is better suited for battles at close range, and the second - at long distances. With the upgraded Incendio, you will be able to quickly deal with groups of enemies that come too close to you.
- Levioso is a good crowd control spell as it allows you to keep enemies in the air for a few seconds. We highly recommend pairing it with Descendo.
- Depulso - gives you the ability to push opponents off ledges and platforms, which is quite fun and effective, as you can kill enemies with almost one hit.
- Glacius is another crowd control spell that freezes enemies for a few seconds. It is more useful than Arresto Momentum, as it has a shorter cooldown. We highly recommend pairing it with Incendio/Confringo for maximum damage to enemies.
- Transformation - has a long cooldown, but allows you to almost completely remove one enemy from the battle, turning him into an item. With the improved version, you can transform enemies into explosive barrels and throw them at other opponents, causing them significant damage.
- Avada Kedavra - has a very long cooldown, but deadly power, as it allows you to instantly kill any target. Very effective in one-on-one combat. If you have entered into a battle with several enemies, then try to destroy the most powerful opponent with them.
Note: Don't forget that a spell of the same shade is required to destroy shields of a certain light. For this reason, you should definitely have enchantments with red, yellow and purple tints in the hotbar.
How to combine spells correctly
Many spells in Hogwarts Legacy can be combined with each other. For example, you can first use an improved Crucio (Expelliarmus or Flippendo) on enemies to put a curse on them, and then use a pumped Avada Kedavra and immediately kill all cursed opponents.
There are also good combinations built around tossing mobs into the air. When doing this, remember that your main spell has a combo of four hits, with the last attack sending the enemy flying. This means that you need to cast an enchantment between every three R2 presses.
For example, here is a powerful air combo: Levioso, main spell x3, Accio, main spell x3, Flipendo, main spell x2 and Descendo. It is long enough that by the time you complete it, Levioso will be ready to use again, so you will be able to keep opponents in the air almost indefinitely.
We should also not forget Petrificus Totalus, which is great for stealth fans. By upgrading this spell, you will be able to deal damage to several enemies at once. Also remember that you can drink an invisibility potion at any time, which will allow you to hide from opponents and inflict a couple more imperceptible blows on them.
You can experiment with different combinations of spells yourself, choosing the most effective among them. If you wish, you can tell about them in the comments to this article.
