In Baldur's Gate 3 Romance are an important part of the plot, allowing you to meet the ending not in splendid isolation, but with the character you like. You can build full-fledged romantic relationships with your companions, and have small affairs with some minor characters.
In this guide, you will learn exactly how to start and develop romances with companions in order to bring them to sex scenes, as well as which NPCs in the game you can sleep with. We will talk about the possibility of simultaneously courting several characters and the consequences of such actions.
How to Start Romances in Baldur's Gate 3
The following describes the general structure of the beginning of a novel with most of the characters with whom it is possible to develop a love relationship. By following it, you can easily enter into a romantic relationship with your desired partner.
Joining a squad
Companions with whom full-fledged romances are possible must be added to the team already in Act 1. You can read about where to find them and how to recruit them in our separate guide. After this, you need to immediately begin building friendly relations with your favorites.
However, there are companions who can potentially join you only in Act 2. We are talking about Khalsina and Mintara, and you won’t be able to take both of them - someone will have to be sacrificed. However, you can win their favor even before they join the squad. There are also companions that appear even later, and romances with them are impossible. They are indicated towards the end of the article.
Companion Approval
It is extremely important to try to make decisions that will lead to approval from your chosen one. While exploring the world and hanging out at camp, there will be many things that can influence her/his opinion of you. If you don't have a very good relationship with her/him, then she/he simply won't show any interest in you when it matters.
Almost every companion has a distinct personality and worldview, so there are things he approves of and things he may not like. So as long as you can maintain an image of your character that matches your companion's traits, gaining their approval will be relatively easy.
Also try to spend time with your chosen one as often as possible, taking him/her into your squad when exploring the world, as well as holding conversations in the camp. In general, the first thing you need to do is make friends with your favorite, and only then try to turn everything into romance. You can find out the level of approval in the party members menu. Note that in our companion guide we list all the things that your teammates approve or disapprove of.
Holiday in the camp
The first romantic scene with your chosen one can happen in the camp after a long rest, if you have raised your approval level with him/her high enough. If this still doesn’t happen (or you want to try to develop relationships with other companions), then you will have to advance through the plot and complete the task of rescuing refugees or jointly attacking the grove with goblins (if you want to romance Mintara).
After this, you will have a party where you can talk with your companions. Some of them will invite you to continue the conversation when everyone else has fallen asleep. Again, similar offers from them will come to you if you have at least slightly improved your relationship with them. Naturally, during the conversation you need to show your interest in building a novel.
You will be able to sleep with some characters already in the first Act, while with others you will not even be able to kiss. This, by the way, can be used if you set yourself the goal of simply making love with the largest number of companions in one playthrough - at the end you can then choose one of them as your main lover/beloved. However, there are several nuances, which we discuss below.
Possibility of simultaneous romances
In the first chapter, you can try to flirt with all available party members, and with some of them you can even go as far as sex scenes (Mintara, Astarion and Laezel), but already in the second Act, many of them will lead you to a conversation where they will ask you to make a choice. Typically, this is done by characters with a good alignment who do not tolerate polygamous relationships (Gale, Will and Karlach).
So you can try to sleep with as many companions as you can in one playthrough, but you'll still end up having to choose only one of them and part ways with the rest. That is, on you can't get a harem ending.
Separately, we should mention small affairs on the side with some NPCs that you will meet at different stages of the plot. For example, you can sleep with Mizora, Haarlep, the drow twins and other characters. But different satellites react to such actions in different ways.
For example, Astarion and Shadowheart won't care if you sleep with Mizora, but Karlach, Gale, Laezel and Will will immediately break off relations with you, but will not leave the team. So we advise you to carefully study your companions to understand how they feel about polygamy, and try not to take unnecessary risks.
As for Halsin, who can join you in the second act, a full-fledged romance with him is also possible, which you can try to combine with the branches of other companions. To do this, you can even ask them for permission to sleep with the druid. Some will agree, while others will refuse. We talked about this in more detail in guide to his novel.
Full length novels
We are talking about relationships that run through almost the entire main plot of the game. You can start them already in the first Act, and you will have to develop these novels throughout all the chapters.
Shadowheart
Shadowheart is a controversial person when it comes to receiving approval and disapproval of your actions. She cannot be called a 100% villain or hero - she is somewhere in the middle, with a slight bias towards good. For this reason, you may have trouble choosing the right solutions at first. However, once you get to know her better, you will be able to more easily understand her motives and desires.
We talked in detail about how to start a romance with her and develop it into separate manual, so we advise you to read it carefully.
Karlach
From a moral compass perspective, Karlach leans more towards good than evil, so if you follow the path of a true hero, you can win her over fairly quickly, but it will be more difficult for villains to do this. At the same time, you can’t call her God’s dandelion, since she loves to fight and is not against violence if it extends to those who deserve a good beating.

Laesel
Luckily, Laezel can be considered one of the easiest companions to understand when it comes to getting her approval. She is neither a good nor an evil character, but she is still closer to the dark side due to the nature and principles of her people. She strives to show her superiority over others, and is not afraid to resort to cruelty to do this. This warlike woman has contempt for weak and cowardly individuals.

Astarion
Astarion can be described in one word - hedonist. He is only concerned with the implementation of personal whims, and he is not ready to adapt to anyone, continuing to live at his own rhythm. His position in life may seem frivolous at first glance, but he is quite consistent in his actions.
As a vampire who has lived a very long life, he loves to indulge in things that bring pleasure. He does not like any manifestations of weakness and senseless acts of heroism - he is more accustomed to enjoying the sight of cruelty and violence. Astarion is an excellent party member for those who intend to live a wild lifestyle and operate at the pace the vampire sets.

Gail
Gale is a real good-natured person whose affection can be won by simply doing good and heroic deeds. At the same time, he will take any villainous deeds with hostility. He is also extremely curious, very intelligent, and has an excellent understanding of magic. If you share his curiosity and support him in learning everything new, then there will definitely not be any problems with him.

Will
Like Gail, Will tries to follow the path of light. At the same time, he looks like a classic hero from fairy tales, so some may find it too boring, but he also has his skeletons in the closet. He condemns any atrocities and fiercely fights for what he considers right. Moreover, he is bound by a contract with the devil. Show understanding of his situation to win the sorcerer's favor.

Part-time novels
This relationship will only be able to begin in the middle of the game, which can make its development a little more difficult, since it will be more difficult to win the favor of the character who recently joined. Often they can be combined with other novels, but they also have separate love endings.
Halsin
You will be able to add him to your team only in the second chapter, and a full-fledged love relationship with him will begin only in Act 3. He advocates polygamy, so if your current partner does not mind, then you can sleep with the druid without breaking off the romance with another character. The famous scene with the bear from the trailer is also associated with it.

Mintara
She is one of the three leaders of the goblin army that plans to attack the tieflings and druids in the Emerald Grove. She can be described as a domineering and cruel woman who is ready to do anything to achieve her goal. In conversations, Mintara does not mince words, so be prepared for barbs directed at you.
We will not detail all the actions that Mintara approves or disapproves of (you can find them in our separate companion guide), but we will indicate general things that she likes or dislikes.
What Mintara approves of:
- Unconditional devotion to the Absolute (in the beginning).
- When her goals and ideals are placed above her own.
- Demonstrating decisiveness in resolving conflicts.
- Teaming up with goblins.
What Mintara doesn't approve of:
- Attempts to go against the Absolute (in the beginning)..
- Attempts to influence her beliefs and will.
- Teaming up with tieflings.
- Demonstration of cowardice.
- Indecisiveness when resolving conflicts or choosing sides.
If you want to unlock a sex scene with this drow (it’s hard to call it a romance yet), then you will first need to find Mintara in the Broken Sanctuary (Goblin Camp). Chat with her and find out about the Absolute's plans for the grove. Then agree to help her.
You have to open the gate that leads to the grove to let the goblin troops inside, and then give a signal to the dark elf. Now you will need to kill all the tieflings. Of course, such actions will not please your party members with a good worldview, so Karlach and Will will leave the group, and Shadowheart and Gale will extremely disapprove of the murder of refugees.
Note: There is an option to recruit Mintara without killing innocents, so that Will and Karlach remain on your team, and even continue the romance with the drow, but then sleeping with her in the first act will not work. We will tell you more about this in a separate guide about the dark elf.
After dealing with all the enemies in the grove, talk to Mintara. You will need to tell her the following phrases:
- Yes, I was glad to help. I made sure that the assault did not drag on.
- Open your mind.
The goblins will then decide to throw a party at your camp. Go there and chat with the dark elf again. Tell her: "Yes. I am all yours, Mintara"
. Next, go to the sleeping bag and click on it. You can decide whether to go to bed alone or go to Mintara - choose the second option.
The drow will take you to a secluded area and then ask you to lie down. Next you will need to select the following replicas:
- Do as she says.
- I want you.
As a result, you will be shown a sex scene with a dark elf. This is where her romantic arc in the first chapter ends. In the second act, you can save her from execution in the Lunar Towers, and then recruit her into your squad. Note that after this it will become a little softer and closer to the light, as it will turn away from the Absolute.
Thanks to a patch released in early September, you will be able to continue your romance with Mintara by talking to her in camp and during missions. The main thing is not to be rude to her and give up love relationships with other characters in order to end up with a drow ending.
One-time affairs
Here we'll talk about characters you can just sleep with without having a long-term romantic relationship. We have already noted above how your lover/beloved may react to this, so below we will simply tell you what exactly needs to be done to make love with some NPCs.
Mizora
First of all, add Will to your squad, siding with the druids and tieflings, opposing the goblins. The presence of Karlach is not necessary, so you can even allow her death. Then continue through the main story until you reach the second act. Rest at your camp to see a scene where Mizora appears.
The She-Devil will give Will a new mission to rescue one of Zariel’s vassals, who is imprisoned in the Moon Towers. After fighting Keteric Torm on the roof and following him to the colony, you can find a vassal in the northern part of the location. You will understand that Mizora herself is a vassal - she will lie in an illithid capsule, which must be destroyed (Strength check) or opened using the device on the right side.
After saving Mizora, you will hear words of gratitude from her and a promise to break the contract with Will in six months. However, you may not care about this part of the deal, so just move on to the third chapter of the main story.
Head to Serpent Rock Fortress and you will find Mizoru in the room in front of the throne room where Gortash is located. Chat with her and she will tell you about the Lord's inauguration ceremony. Watch the coronation and talk again with the she-devil, who will mention that the Duke will die. Go to camp and rest.
Mizora will come to your camp again, and she will say that she is ready to enter into a lifelong contract with Will and tell him how to save the life of his father, Duke of Ravengard. He can also break the contract with her, but then his father will die. In our case, any option will do. After this, the she-devil will remain in your camp for a while.
Don't ask Mizora to leave, just rest for a couple of days in the camp until you see an exclamation mark above the winged beast - this means that she wants to talk to you about something. Enter into a dialogue with her, and then choose the following phrases:
- Sounds interesting. What do you suggest?
- Smile.
After this, Mizora will say that he will meet you tonight. You can immediately click on the sleeping bag or do other things for now, and then return to camp. In any case, the she-devil will visit you at night. Tell her this:
- Enjoy the inexpressible sensations that come from the circle.
- “Well, go ahead. Show me the pleasures of hell" or "Sigh and gather your courage."
- “Taste with ecstasy from the River of Blood. Enjoy the taste" or "Take a sip to try."
- Choose any underworld, just don’t reject Mizoru.
- Take a step towards meeting Mizore with her outstretched wings.
Then you will either like or dislike your night with Mizora. Again, let us remind you of the consequences of this decision. Many good-minded companions will not approve of your actions, and your lover may even break off the romantic relationship with you.
The keeper
The spoiler reveals one important plot twist, so if you haven’t already guessed who exactly the Guardian is, we don’t advise you to reveal it. Let us only note that in order to develop a romance with him, you should choose warm and friendly responses during conversations.
So, the Guardian is actually an illithid called the Emperor - you learn about this in Act Three. Starting an affair with him is relatively easy. The main thing is not to do anything that could undermine his trust in you, and try to develop friendly relations with him. Then you will need to find the room where he is in the third chapter. You can get there either through the sewers of the Lower City, or through the back of the kitchen of the Elven Lied Tavern (in which case you will have to fight an army of rats and githyanki). Note that the Emperor will maintain contact with you, leading you to himself.
Once you reach the Emperor's chambers, explore them and listen to the illithid to learn about his past. Having done this, go to the camp and rest. The Emperor will visit you at night. Talk to him and treat his situation with understanding, that is, there is no need to be rude and judgmental to him.
Note: Despite the opinion of many players, it is not necessary to eat the astral-touched larva and become half-illithid to see the rest of the scenes.
As long as you don't reject or avoid the Emperor, the romance route with him should go smoothly. Then, after a couple of long rests in the camp, the Emperor will come to visit you again. When talking to him, choose the following answers:
- “You really don't look like a mind flayer” or “You've had a very interesting life. Why did you hide it from me?
- “Really” or “Are you trying to flirt with me?”
- “Reach towards him” or “Take his tentacle in your hand and invite him in.”
The subsequent love scene has two options, which are opened as follows:
- If you have sufficiently developed Intelligence and History, then you can choose the phrase “Kiss the tentacle in the hope that it is an erogenous appendage,” in which case you will be shown a scene with an illithid.
- Say, “Could you please open up the tentacle.” After this, the Emperor will say that he can take the form of the Guardian if you prefer. If you agree, you will see a scene with an illusion, and if you refuse, you will be shown a scene with an illithid.
Either way, you will wake up in the Emperor's arms. Your teammates will then enter through the portal since you have not closed your thoughts to them. You can see the disgust on their faces. However, neither of them subsequently mentions this event during a conversation. So you can safely romance the mind flayer even if you are in a relationship with other companions.
Haarlep (Raphael)
You won't be able to sleep with Raphael himself, but you can do this with his personal incubus named Haarlep, who bears a striking resemblance to his master. You can meet him in the domain of the devil Raphael in Avernus. To get there you need to do the following:
- You can get to Raphael’s possessions as part of the tasks “Free Orpheus” or “Make a deal with the devil.” Making certain decisions will create a reason to go there, for example, to obtain the Orphic Hammer or steal a contract.
- A portal that leads to the desired location can be created using the Helsik Ritual in the “Devil's Valley” in the Lower City.
- Then start exploring the House of Hope and enter the boudoir, where you will meet the incubus Haarlep.
The incubus will not immediately attack you, but will invite you to undress and lie down on the bed. Further events may unfold as follows:
- If you reject Haarlep's offer or provoke him into hostile actions, you will have to fight him and several imps. Then you can take the key to the safe from his corpse.
- Let him do whatever he wants with you, and then pretend to be helpless so you can see foreplay with the devil. Now let him use your body, but not your mind. You will find out where the safe is (behind the picture on the left side of the bed) and receive the key to it.
- Let him do whatever he wants with you, and then pretend to be helpless so you can see foreplay with the devil. Then give Haarlep your heart and soul. As a result, you will see a bad ending in which your hero dies.
Note that inside the safe there are soul coins and a note that tells how to get the Orphic Hammer.
Twins Nim and Sorn
When visiting the brothel "Weasel Shares" in the third chapter, you can meet the drow twins Nym and Sorn Orlys. You can purchase their services, either separately or together. If you help the owner of this establishment, you won’t have to pay at all. However, you won’t see a full scene with them – there will only be a dark screen and the characters’ voices.
If you wish, you can try inviting a significant other with whom you are developing a relationship to join you. Some of them will refuse you and even forbid you to sleep with them (Mintara and Laezel), while others will not mind joining in the fun (Astarion and Halsin).
Naoise Nallinto
When visiting the brothel "Weasel Shares" in the third chapter, go to the room called "Grotto of the Nymph". A cutscene featuring Naoiz and the client will launch here. When the conversation reaches a dead end, you will need to rescue the nymph.
Wanting to thank you, Naoise will offer you a session of special hypnosis with erotic overtones. You can agree or refuse her. Please note that your beloved/beloved will react to this practically in no way (not all companions have been tested), since we are still not talking about actually sleeping with a nymph.
Jaheira and Minsk
You will meet Jaheira in the second act in the Last Light tavern. She can be recruited into the team when completing the main storyline. There are also several side quests associated with it. Although in the first two parts of Baldur's Gate players could start a romance with this character, in the third it is impossible to do this.
As for Minsk, this brave and experienced warrior can be found in the third chapter and even invited to your team. To do this, Jaheira must be present in your squad, and under no circumstances should you use lethal attacks during the duel with Minsk while completing a secondary task "High Harpist".
Again, you won’t be able to have an affair with him, no matter how hard you try - you can only win his favor and make him your good friend. Apparently the developers decided that these characters were too important to the canon to influence their story so much.
Other Baldur's Gate 3 Romance Questions
Is it possible to develop romances with co-op friends?
Unfortunately or fortunately, starting and developing romantic relationships with your friends, who are exploring the world of the game with you and going through its quests, it is forbidden.
Can the Dark Temptation have affairs with companions?
The developers did not introduce any restrictions for Dark Seduction, so it can romance absolutely everyone who is available to an ordinary character. True, it will be somewhat more difficult for him to interact with companions who have a good worldview because of the darkness inside him, which is eager to commit some evil act.
In addition, in the second chapter, during the personal task of Dark Seduction, he will need to kill a character important to the plot. If refused, an additional scene will occur in the camp in which the darkness will try to force the protagonist to kill his lover/lover. This can be countered by passing a couple of Wisdom checks.
Dark Seduction also has its own ending with the chosen one/chosen one, which depends on whether the hero was able to get rid of the darkness within himself or fully accepted himself for who he is.
