In Baldur's Gate 3 companions are unique characters that you can take into your team. There can be no more than three companions in your squad at the same time - the rest will wait for you in the camp. Each of them has their own backstory, worldview, class and set of characteristics, so you should carefully consider who you take into your group.
In this guide we will tell you where you can find all the satellites and what parameters they have. Novels, by the way, you can hook up with almost any companion. Let us add that there are characters who do not accompany you when exploring the world, but wait in the camp, providing various services. We will also tell you about the protagonist's possible pets, which can be tamed and kept at the base.
Shadowheart

The main attributes of the character are listed below:
- Class: Priest (Domain of Deception)
- Race: High Half-Elf

Where to find and how to join
The first time you encounter her is on the nautiloid, where you can take her out of the capsule or leave her in it. Your choice will affect where you can find her after the shipwreck. In the first case, you will find her almost immediately as you exit the fallen illithid ship. She will lie unconscious on the sand at the following coordinates - X: 271, Y: 221.
If you didn't rescue Shadowheart on the ship, you can later find her near the Overgrown Ruins portal and the dungeon entrance (X: 285, Y: 303). Of course, in this option she will be less friendly with you, but you can still add her to your squad.
If you missed these meetings, then do not worry about this, as you will be able to meet her in the Emerald Grove, where she was staying with other refugees from the Druids. You can read more about her rescue and joining the team in our separate manual.
What does Shadowheart approve and disapprove of?
At first glance, Shadowheart may seem like a very cold person who only cares about his own skin and achieving his goals. She hides her good side deep down, and it is the protagonist who can bring it out. We will not detail all the actions that Shadowheart approves or disapproves of (you can find them in our separate material on this topic), but we will indicate general things that she likes or dislikes.
What Shadowheart approves of:
- Kind attitude towards children.
- Kind attitude towards animals.
- Avoiding unnecessary violence where possible through persuasion or manipulation.
- Showing their distrust of the Githyanki.
- Speech against oppression and oppressors (possibly through violence).
- Allow her to be faithful to Shar up to a certain point and not reproach her for it.
What Shadowheart doesn't approve of:
- Lack of respect for her personal boundaries.

Where to find and how to join
You can do this almost immediately after the fall of the Nautiloid in Act 1. Go north to the point indicated on the map, and then turn right. Near the rock you will see a purple portal (X: 212, Y: 317) – interact with him. After the first phrase, you will see a hand sticking out of the circle.
Then choose a response with a Strength (7) or other attribute check to pull Gale out of the portal. Most characters will be able to take out the mage without any effort. If you fail, you can try again, but now you will need to get 12 points.

Where to find and how to join
You can do this almost immediately after the shipwreck in Act 1. Move up after finding Shadowheart, and then turn left and you will see Astarion near the cliff (X: 180, Y: 289) calling for help. After a small skirmish with him, accept his apology, and then take him to your team.

Laesel
Characteristics
The main attributes of the character are listed below:
- Class: Warrior
- Race: Githyanki
- STR: 17 units
- DEX: 13 units
- CON: 15 units
- INT: 10 units
- MDR: 12 units
- CHAR: 8 units
Additional parameters and features:
- Movement speed: 9 meters
- Night vision range: 2 meters
- Load capacity: 210 kilograms
- Romance Possibility: present
- Personal Quests: Githyanki Warrior
Laezel is an excellent warrior with balanced characteristics. She deals significant damage and can withstand a lot of attacks, plus, over time she gains a large number of interesting abilities. She also has a rather useful skill called "Magic Hand", which allows her to manipulate objects, for example, pushing enemies off a cliff.
So if your own character is not a warrior, then we highly recommend that you take this Githyanki into your squad. By the way, her starting armor can be called one of the best at the beginning of the game.
Where to find and how to join
You can meet her at the very beginning of the game immediately after waking up. Just walk forward, following the quest marker. You'll soon exit the ship outside, where you'll encounter the Githyanki in a short cutscene. She will immediately join your team, but not for long.
After the shipwreck you will again need to find the girl. Move north, passing next to the “remnants” of the ship, and cross the bridge to the other side. Then turn right, go to the blue cart and turn right again. You'll find Laesel in a cage ahead (X: 244, Y: 370). Convince the tieflings to leave or deal with them.
Then take the bow and shoot at the bottom hatch near the cage to free the girl (you can also throw a dagger or hatchet). After that, talk to her and add her to your group.
Note: If you attack tieflings, your good-aligned party members will not approve.
Let's add that you can convince the tieflings to kill Laezel, and then you will have to fight her, or just leave, leaving her in the cage. If you help the Githyanki, but do not take her into your team, then a few days later you can find her lifeless body not far from a detachment of her brothers near the bridge (do not forget to pick up her things in this case).
If you help the Githyanki near the bridge in the battle, but again refuse Laezel to join the group, then you can find her at the very beginning of the Mountain Pass. Here you will be offered the last time to take a girl on your team. If you refuse again, you will find her desiccated corpse in one of the areas of the Cursed Lands.
What Laesel approves and disapproves of
Laezel does not tolerate people who constantly fool around and enjoy every little thing. She calls everyone around her complete fools, so she considers her opinion to be the only correct one. If you don't agree with her on everything, you'll make her angry. We will not indicate in detail all the actions that Laezel approves or disapproves of (you can find them in our separate material on the topic), but we will indicate general things that she likes or does not like.
What Laesel approves of:
- When you agree with her opinion.
- Positive attitude towards the Githyanki.
- Demonstrating your strength in front of others.
- Aggressive and ruthless actions towards your enemies.
What Laezel doesn't approve of:
- Disagree with her opinion.
- Take the side of the weak.
- Using non-violent methods to resolve conflicts (maybe intimidation doesn't count).
- Negative attitude towards the Githyanki.

- MDR: 10 units
- CHAR: 17 units
Additional parameters and features:
- Movement speed: 9 meters
- Night vision range: 2 meters
- Load capacity: 120 kilograms
- Romance Possibility: present
- Personal quests: Blade of the Frontier
As a Frontier Blade, he wields a rapier well and is also capable of casting some terrible spells. All this turns him into a dangerous opponent, both at close and long ranges. If you can level him up correctly, he could very well become your most powerful offensive mage.
Where to find and how to join
This can be done already in the first Act. Get to the fork (X: 239, Y: 411), shown in the pictures below, and then turn left to enter the Emerald Grove. Almost immediately a cutscene with druids and tieflings will begin. As part of it, you will see Will for the first time.
Deal with the goblins and go deep into the Emerald Grove. On the wooden platform you will find Will training the children. Talk to him and add him to your group.
What Will approves and disapproves of
Despite having a tadpole brain and several demonic friends, Will is a very friendly and noble guy. We will not indicate in detail all the actions that Will approves or disapproves of (you can find them in our separate material on the topic), but we will indicate general things that he likes or does not like.

Karlach

- INT: 8 units
- MDR: 12 units
- CHA: 10 units
Additional parameters and features:

An excellent melee fighter who, thanks to Fury, can survive on the front line for a long time, tanking enemies and inflicting significant damage on them. You can take Laezel to the team instead.
Where to find and how to join
Naturally, the first thing you will need to do is invite a girl to your squad. This can be done already in Act 1. To do this, take on the side mission “Blade of the Frontier”, given by Will and related to the hunt for Karls. You can find it southeast of the quest marker - go down the slope to the river and walk along the log.
Karlakh is located in the Vozkhozhaya Road location. Its exact coordinates are X: 109, Y: 510. Then listen to the she-devil and spare her. She will subsequently appear in your camp. More information about recruitment can be found in our satellite guide.
What does Karlach approve and disapprove of?
We will not indicate in detail all the actions that Karlach approves or disapproves of (you can find them in our separate material on the topic), but we will indicate general things that she likes or does not like.

- Kind attitude towards children.
- Heroic actions (saving innocents, destroying evil, etc.).
- Compassion for tieflings.
- Solving problems through violence, unless we are talking about crazy massacres or villainous acts.
- Taking the side of the weak when they are being bullied.

- Demonstration of senseless cruelty towards others.
- Cowardly actions.
- Teaming up with goblins.
- Indifferent attitude towards tieflings.

- MDR: 10 units
- CHAR: 15 units
Additional parameters and features:
- Movement speed: 9 meters
- Night vision range: 24 meters
- Load capacity: 120 kilograms
- Romance Possibility: present
- Personal quests: Rescue Mintara
Mintara is a paladin, and accordingly is a very versatile character, capable of healing and supporting allies, as well as inflicting considerable damage on enemies and tanking. So she could be a good replacement for Shadowheart in the second chapter.
Where to find and how to join
It will be possible to take Mintara into the squad only in the second Act, but already in the first chapter it will be necessary to create the conditions for her joining. To do this, find the dark elf in the Broken Sanctuary (Goblin Camp) and chat with her. Agree to help the drow attack the tieflings and druids in the Emerald Grove.
Then, during the party at your campsite, don't be rude to Mintara or challenge her beliefs. It is also recommended to sleep with her to gain approval. Continue through the main storyline until you reach the second Act. Reach the Moon Towers and go to the main hall (X: -152, Y: -190). There you will see how the drow and goblins are blamed for the failure and planned to be executed.
You will need to rescue the dark elf from the dungeon, and then invite her to stay in your camp. She will reject the teachings of the Absolute and will soon appear at your site. This is where you can invite her to your squad. We talked in more detail about saving Mintara in a separate guide.
Note: Note that you will not be able to take both Mintara and Halsina into your squad at the same time, so you will have to make a choice in advance.
What does Mintara approve and disapprove of?

- Demonstrating decisiveness in resolving conflicts.
- Teaming up with goblins.
What Mintara doesn't approve of:
- Attempts to go against the Absolute (in the beginning)..
- Attempts to influence her beliefs and will.
- Teaming up with tieflings.
- Demonstration of cowardice.
- Indecisiveness when resolving conflicts or choosing sides.
Halsin
Characteristics
The main attributes of the character are listed below:
- Class: Druid
- Race: Wood Elf
- STR: 10 units
- DEX: 14 units
- CON: 14 units
- INT: 8 units
- MDR: 17 units
- CHAR: 12 units
Additional parameters and features:
- Movement speed: 11 meters
- Night vision range: 12 meters
- Load capacity: 140 kilograms
- Romance Possibility: present
- Personal quests: Rescue the druid Halsin and lift the dark curse
A good support that has several useful supporting spells. He also has offensive spells and the ability to transform into a beast, giving him an extra health bar, so he can play the role of a tank in a squad. However, among satellites there are more interesting options.
Where to find and how to join
As in the case of Mintara, it will be possible to make him a permanent member of the group only in the second chapter, but before that you need to complete certain actions in the first act. First of all, take the side of the druids and protect their grove. If you team up with the goblins and Mintara and then attack the grove, you will automatically block all further interactions with Halsin, as he will either die or refuse to become a member of your party.
Be sure to complete the quests “Save the Druid Halsin” and “Save the Refugees.” Make sure the druid is not killed before the victory celebration is held. The next day you should be able to invite Halsin to your camp - do it. When he visits your site, greet him and start a friendly conversation with him.
In the second chapter, you will need to take on the quest “Remove the Dark Curse” - to do this, you need to sing a song on the lute to Art Kulakh, who is in the Last Light tavern, which can be taken from the corpse of Malus. If the patient has already died, then “talk” to his corpse.
After talking with Art, tell Khalsin about how you can lift the curse. Then start going through the corresponding quest, during which you will discover a child named Thaniel. Later, when Halsin finds himself between dimensions, be sure to defend the gate to the World of Shadows by holding out for 4 turns. Otherwise, the druid will die.
You must also prevent the boy's death by uniting his two halves and dealing with Keteric Torm. If you don’t do this, you won’t be able to lift the curse, so even if Halsin joins your team, you won’t be able to have an affair with him. You will know that you did everything right if, when leaving the Shadow-Blinded Lands, you see a scene with the shadow disappearing. We talked about this in more detail in the passages of the corresponding quests.
Note: Note that you will not be able to take both Mintara and Halsina into your squad at the same time, so you will have to make a choice in advance.
What does Khalsin approve and disapprove of?
We will not indicate in detail all the actions that Khalsin approves or disapproves of (you can find them in our separate material on the topic), but we will indicate only general things that he likes or does not like.
What Halsin approves of:
- Respect for nature.
- Showing kindness to animals.
- Maintaining his Druid beliefs.
- General displays of kindness and heroism.
What Halsin doesn't approve of:
- Causing harm to animals.
- Unreasonable acts of cruelty and violence.
- Attempts to challenge his Druid beliefs.
- Villainous acts of all kinds.
Jaheira
Characteristics
The main attributes of the character are listed below:
- Class: Druid
- Race: High Half-Elf
- STR: 10 units
- DEX: 14 units
- CON: 14 units
- INT: 8 units
- MDR: 17 units
- CHAR: 12 units
Additional parameters and features:
- Movement speed: 9 meters
- Night vision range: 12 meters
- Load capacity: 140 kilograms
- Romance possibility: none
- Personal Quests: High Harpist
In many ways, he is similar to Halsin, so he can be a good replacement in a squad if you want to keep a druid in it.
Where to find and how to join
You will be able to meet her for the first time in the Last Light tavern while completing the quest “Getting into the Moon Towers,” in which you need to find protection from the dark curse. She can become your guide, and then a full-fledged companion.
Before you can make her a full member of your squad, a number of conditions will need to be met:
- Prevent the death of Isobel during the attack of the winged horrors and Marcus (part of the task “Deal with the Kidnapping”).
- Don't let Shadowheart kill Song of the Night for Shar's sake.
- As part of the attack on the Moon Tower, ask Jaheira to join your team. If she remains an NPC, she will most likely die during the upcoming battle.
- Do not kill Minsk while dueling him using non-lethal attacks (part of the High Harpist mission).
What does Jaheira approve and disapprove of?
We will not detail all the actions that Jaheira approves or disapproves of (you can find them in our separate material on this topic), but we will indicate general things that she likes or dislikes.
What Jaheira approves of:
- Any heroic deeds.
- Demonstrate strong leadership qualities.
- Demonstration of decisiveness in resolving conflict situations.
What Jaheira doesn't approve of:
- Any villainous actions.
- Unreasonable acts of violence and cruelty.

Minsk
Characteristics
The main attributes of the character are listed below:
- Class: Pathfinder
- Race: Human
- STR: 12 units
- DEX: 17 units
- CON: 13 units
- INT: 8 units
- MDR: 15 units
- CHA: 10 units
Additional parameters and features:
- Movement speed: 9 meters
- Night vision range: 2 meters
- Load capacity: 200 kilograms
- Romance possibility: none
- Personal Quests: High Harpist
A decent fighter who can adapt to many combat situations using an animal companion, shadows or other abilities. In terms of overall versatility, his skill set is on par with Laezel's. It’s just that it occurs almost at the end of the game, where the player has long ago set up the optimal group, which he is unlikely to want to adjust to a new companion, even one as iconic as Minsk.
Where to find and how to join
First of all, you will need to recruit Jaheira into your squad - without her you will not be able to annex Minsk. Then take on her personal quest called "High Harpist" and get to the bald big guy. You have to fight him in a duel (there is no way to avoid it).
During the fight, you should not kill him, so when he has 5-10 health points left, turn on the passive skill “Switch to non-lethal attacks” and finish off the opponent (he will have 1 HP left). Under no circumstances attack him with grenades, arrows or damaging spells.
Next, choose those answers that can convince the Emperor to create a protective barrier over Minsk’s mind so that the Absolute cannot control him. After that, just follow Minsk until he finds Boo the Hamster. Now you can invite him to your team.
What does Minsk approve and disapprove of?
We will not indicate in detail all the actions that Minsk approves or disapproves of (you can find them in our separate material on this topic), but we will indicate general things that it likes or does not like.
What Minsk approves:
- Any heroic deeds.
- Kind attitude towards animals, especially Boo.
- Always stand up for your teammates.
- Support for his beliefs and ideas
What Minsk does not approve of:
- Unreasonable acts of violence and cruelty.
- Challenging or ridiculing his beliefs and ideas.
- Showing disrespect to animals, especially Boo.
Mercenary system
Mercenaries are special characters that you can hire into your service to help you in battles with enemies, exploring the world and completing quests. They have no personal quests and no unique dialogues with them, and they cannot be romanced. However, in terms of combat, they are no different from your other companions.
As soon as the Withered One appears in your camp, talk to him and tell him that you want to hire a mercenary. You will have to pay him 100 gold. There will be a total of 12 fighters on the list - one for each class.
No more than three mercenaries can be recruited into a group and camp at the same time. Unlike regular companions, you can fire hired soldiers at any time. Their level will drop to 1, and all items from the inventory will go to you.
What are mercenaries for?
It is not at all necessary to take mercenaries into your team. If you were able to assemble a good squad from your existing companions, then you can safely forget about this function. But those who follow the evil path often have extremely limited choice in setting up their own team, since some companions leave the main character, not approving of his actions. This is where mercenaries will help you.
You can even assemble your entire group from mercenaries, taking the most suitable classes and pumping them up the way you need. True, playing through the game in this case will be less interesting, since the hired characters practically do not react in any way to your actions and do not conduct conversations with each other.
Camp Companions and Familiars
We are talking about characters who will not constantly accompany you while exploring the world, but will only appear in your camp. From some of them you can purchase unique items, while from others you can obtain valuable information or skills.
As for familiars, this is a separate category of creatures that you can summon at any time. They will help you in battle or when exploring locations.
We (Mirnat)
A walking brain covered in spikes... A good helper in battles in the Prologue. You will find him immediately after the start of the game in the second room on board the illithid ship. After hearing a strange voice, go up on the platform and approach the man with his brain exposed.
Pass skill checks and then decide whether to kill the brain or remove it from the body. If you choose the second option, a new companion will join you. He will accompany you throughout the entire tutorial level and then disappear.
The second time you will meet him only in the second chapter. When visiting Absolute's lair, go to the Mortuary and find an old acquaintance in the cage (X: 663, Y: -63). You can free him by receiving the key from the Chop standing nearby. As a result, you will have a new command called We on your action panel - he will help you in battles.
Withered
You can find it in the Overgrown Ruins by going into the dark crypt and opening the sarcophagus. Later, these undead will appear in your camp. With it, you can reset skill points, change class, and even resurrect dead companions. Plus, it is he who opens access to the mercenary system. We talked more about it in separate manual.
Volo
Volo is a bard who can first be found on the lower level of the Emerald Grove near the ceremonial shrine. He will want to ask us about the skirmish with the goblins and will express a desire to go to their camp to collect information about their traditions and culture.
You can safely skip this meeting and immediately head to the goblin settlement, since the musician will go there anyway. You will find it in the main square next to the passage to the Broken Sanctum (see screenshots above). It will not be possible to have a normal conversation with him, since the goblin will not like it, and she will ban Volo in the cage.
After this, the quest “Save Volo” will appear in your journal. After completing it, you will be able to invite a bard to your camp. It will remain there until you decide to have eye surgery. In this case, your eye will be replaced with an artificial one, and you will receive a permanent “Seeing the Invisible” buff, thanks to which you will be able to detect all invisible creatures within 9 meters.
Volo can later be found in the third act, near the docks. He will be tied to a cart with barrels moving along the railroad tracks. Help him again. However, this time he will not stay in your camp.
Shkryab
You can find the dog just above the entrance to the bear's nest at the following coordinates - X: 86, Y: 467. Don't forget to drink a potion or activate a spell to talk to the dog.
During a conversation with Shkryab, tell him the following:
- “What happened here?” or “Who is this?”
- Pass an Attention, Intimidation, or Persuasion check (10).
- He's unlikely to wake up.
- If you want, you can come with me.
- If he doesn't wake up, find me by smell. I have a camp.
Now return to camp and select "long rest". The next day you will see Shkryab in the parking lot. Talk to him again. As a result, he will remain in your camp. You will also be able to summon him through the quick access panel. It makes it easier to explore the world, helping you find unique items.
Bear's cub
Another pet that can be adopted after the death of its parent. The first thing you will need to do is find the Bear Owl's Nest, and then kill the mother of the cub or leave her alone. In any case, the beast will be killed, and her baby will be dragged away by the goblins to the camp. You will need to get him out of there.
Then, in the camp, tame the animal, giving it food and healing its wounds. Ultimately, it will be yours forever. If you also took Shkryab with you, the animals will become friends with each other. We talked about this in more detail in separate guide.
