In Resident Evil 4 (2023), keys are essential items that can be used to open locked doors, chests, crates, cages, and cabinets. Some of them allow you to get valuable treasures, while others allow you to advance in the story. In this guide, we will tell you where you can find all the keys, and how exactly they should be used.
Where to find small keys in Resident Evil 4 Remake
In total, you can find eight small keys that open the same number of locked boxes that contain a variety of treasures. You can only find them in the Village and the Castle. Below we will indicate their exact location.
Small key and locked box 1
- Plot: Chapter 2
- Location: Valley and Abandoned Factory
First you will need to find a small key located in the Valley. Go to the house shown in the screenshots below, turn right and get the key from the chest.
Now return to the Abandoned Factory and go to the room where you picked up your equipment earlier. There, open the locked box with the found key to get the decoration.
Small key and locked box 2
- Plot: Chapters 2 and 3
- Location: Village Chief's Mansion and Village Square
While in the Village Chief's Mansion, go to the corner of the dining room on the first floor and look for a bedside table there. On it you will find the second small key.
As part of Chapter 3, return to the Village Square and enter the stone house located to the north. Inside, turn right and open the locked chest of drawers with the key you found earlier.
Small key and locked box 3
- Plot: Chapter 3
- Location: Fish hatchery
Before heading out to get fuel for the boat, enter the small building in the western part of the area. There you will find a table with a drawer in which a small key is hidden.
Now go back to the merchant in the southeast. Turn left from the shop and go down the stairs to the pier. Once at the bottom, go to the right and open the chest of drawers with the found key to pick up the relic.
Small key and locked box 4
- Plot: Chapter 4
- Location: Altar in the forest and Settlement by the Lake
Go to the Altar in the Forest located north of the Settlement by the Lake. You can get there if you go through the iron door with the symbol and climb the stairs. The item you need is on the cart next to the barrel.
Now go to the house in the settlement and find a chest of drawers there. Open it with the key you found earlier to pick up the gold ingot.
Small key and locked box 5
- Plot: Chapter 4
- Location: Church
Return to the church, open the lattice gate and go through the double doors. After entering the building, go to the table in the far right corner and take the key.
Now exit the church, turn left and run into the alley on the left. Then immediately enter the left door. Turn right and open the chest of drawers. In it you will find a gem.
Small key and locked box 6
- Plot: Chapter 8
- Location: Binding shop
Having guessed riddle with lithographic plates, go out into the corridor and go forward along it. Then turn left and pick up the small key that lies on the book.
Next, return to the workshop and use the key to open one of the drawers of the chest of drawers to get the jewelry out of it.
Small key and locked box 7
- Plot: Chapter 9
- Location: Main Hall and Audience Hall
While in the indicated room, climb the stairs to the second level, and then go through the door on the right (north), leading to the Armory. Walking along the corridor, go to the dark brown chest of drawers on the left side and get the key from it.
Now go to the Audience Hall and look for a chest of drawers near the northern wall. Open his locked box to get a gold ingot from it.
Small key and locked box 8
- Plot: Chapter 12
- Location: Ballroom and Bailey Wall
After starting Chapter 12, use the elevator to go upstairs to the Ballroom. Then go to the right of the trolley and open the suitcase lying on the table. In it you will find a key.
Return to the castle wall to the 4th tower. It contains a locked cabinet, which you can now open with a small key. You can get to this location both from the Wine Cellar and from the Yard.
Where to find the key to the old chapel in Resident Evil 4 Remake
You can find this key within the fourth chapter, after you leave the Cave with a drawing. It lies in a small chest, which is hidden in the chapel with a purple sheet. The screenshots below show its exact location.
With this key, you will be able to open the five village shrines located in the Village. They are hidden various treasures. Below we will tell you where to find them.
Village Sanctuary 1
- Plot: Chapter 4
- Location: Settlement by the Lake
Swim to the settlement located in the northwestern part of the lake. There, find the village sanctuary and open it with the previously found key. Inside you will find an ornament.
Village Sanctuary 2
- Plot: Chapter 4
- Location: Lake
Move to the western part of the lake along the water channel and get off the boat at the pier shown in the screenshots below. Climb the stone ledge and open the village sanctuary to collect the luxurious bracelet.
Village Sanctuary 3
- Plot: Chapter 4
- Location: Quarry
Return to the location located between the Quarry and the merchant. There you will find a village sanctuary with a lamp with butterflies hidden in it.
Village Sanctuary 4
- Plot: Chapter 5
- Location: Farm
Find the village sanctuary in the northeastern part of the area and open it to get an old smoking pipe.
Village Sanctuary 5
- Plot: Chapter 6
- Location: checkpoint
After reaching the indicated area, climb up to the wooden platform and follow it to the southwest to find the village sanctuary. Open it to get an elegant hair clip.
Where to find the cube device in Resident Evil 4 Remake
You can find the cube key in the ninth chapter. Get to the Main Hall, go up to the second floor, go through the north door and reach the Armory. Take the lion's head there, and then return to the corridor and look for a red chest there, in which the desired item lies.
With this mechanism, you can open cages and cabinets locked with a square lock. To do this, it will be necessary to correctly choose the side of the cubic device. Inside, various treasures will lie.
Square lock 1

- Location: main hall
Before placing the heads on the chimera statue, return to the room with the merchant and writing device, and then interact with the golden cage. Install a cube lock in it, choosing the right side (see the screenshot below). As a result, you will find a lamp with butterflies.
Square lock 2
- Plot: Chapter 9
- Location: Audience Hall
Get into the golden minecart by going through the door in the merchant room in the Main Hall. This will return you to the Audience Hall. Here, look for a golden cage located in the northwest of the location. Open it with the Cube Device to get the Justice Statue.
Square lock 3
- Plot: Chapter 10
- Location: Library
Having regained control of Leon, go to the southern part of the indicated area and climb the stairs to the room where the president's daughter found a bunch of keys on the wound. Approach the golden safe in the wall and open it with the cube device. Take the CQBR assault rifle.
Square lock 4
- Plot: Chapter 10
- Location: main hall
Enter the room south of the three-headed chimera statue. Here, find the golden cage and correctly insert the cube device into it. Inside you will find a golden lynx.
Square lock 5
- Plot: Chapter 12
- Location: Throne room
In the specified area, look for a golden cage, standing in the corner on the right side of the room. Use the cube device to open it and get the golden chicken egg.
All Story Keys in Resident Evil 4 Remake
We are talking about the keys, the finding of which is required to advance through the story. Often, obtaining them is associated with solving certain puzzles. Below we'll explain exactly how to get these items and what they unlock.
Hunting house key
You can find it in the kitchen of the first building you enter in chapter 1. It is needed to open the door opposite the kitchen exit.
Key with symbol
You can get it at the end of the second chapter after solving puzzle with door handle at the Village Chief's Mansion. The key lies in the bedroom, located on the second floor of the estate. You will find it in the dresser drawer.
With it, you can open the gate, located near the headman's house and leading back to the village.
Returning to the village square, you will see the collapse of the tower. Approach the house near the collapsed structure and open its door with the key with the symbol.
Progress through the story until the fourth chapter begins. Get to the settlement by the lake and look for a door with a symbol there. Open it with the specified key, go to the right and climb the stairs to get to the Altar in the forest. Here you can find clockwork keeper, small key and errand "Catch me a big fish".
When you get to the Castle, we advise you to sell the key with the symbol to the merchant for 2000 pesetas, as you will not need to use it anywhere else.
Church emblem
To get it, you need to find the heads of a blasphemer and a heretic, and then place them on a special altar. We have detailed how to do this in separate guide. Note that this item opens the lattice door of the church, allowing you to enter inside this building.
Dungeon Key
Play through the seventh chapter until you reach the torture chamber in the dungeon located under the castle. Soon you will find a bloody trail on the floor and hear a strange metallic clang. Move along the bloodstains until you find a corpse in a dead end - inspect it to find the right key.
After escaping from the monster, you will again find yourself in the torture chamber, where Ashley will be waiting for you. Use the found key to open the locked door in the northern part of the room. When you get out of this area, sell the dungeon key to the merchant for 1200 pesetas, as you won't need it anymore.
Bunch of keys
You can find her in the ninth chapter when playing as Ashley in the Library. Go to the southern area of the indicated location and place the lantern on the pedestal for a ladder to appear. Climb up it and take the desired item from the table.

Key cards 1, 2 and 3 access levels
You have to get these cards during the passage of the thirteenth chapter. To get them, you will have to solve two puzzles with the terminal: in Sectional And Freezer, and also find wrench. We have covered this in detail in separate guides.
Louis Key
You will receive it from the dying Louis, who was severely wounded by Krauser in the eleventh chapter. You'll need it later to get to Luis' lab. After leaving this room, you can sell the key for 2500 pesetas, as you will no longer need it.
Hydro scooter key
You will receive it from Ada when she leaves the island in her rescue helicopter in the last chapter. After defeating the Saddler, you will have two minutes to leave the island. Take the elevator down to the underground passage and then get to the jet ski moored on the pier. Use the received key to run it.
